Djing abroad.......

Anyone got any advise or contact etc... for djing aboard? Somewhere nice like ibiza, mainland spain greece etc....? Would love to go out for three or four months and work aboard.

Your best bet is to either find an agency, who will put you in a larger club (easier said than done), or do like i done, went over for a 2 week holiday (open ticket) approach a smaller bar and offer to dj for free for a couple of nights to show how good you are. Then sit down with the owner and sort an arrangement where you stay longer, they pay you enough to feed yourself on, and they put you up aswell. As word gets around that theres a good dj in town, you get approached by bigger bars, then clubs etc. Make the same deal for board, and up the money each time.

This worked for me, and i went back 2 years running, picking up where i left off each time.You have to be careful not to bar/club hop to much or too fast or they wont approach as they get think you will last a week and leave.

You alo have to go over for the first week of the season really, or places get filled and you find it alot harder.

Did a stint in the south of france (antibes) back in 1992 for Club Cantabrica, they have sites scattered all over, could be worth a try they used to scream for english jocks!

I have done a corporate gig in Germany but that's not what you are after.

If I remember, the pay is low but it's the experaince you are getting at the end of it.

You either love it or hate it. I would love to give it a go but don't have the bottle really.

Crete, Hersonissos. Plugs rewired? I went with a bag of music. Im guessing you dont want mobile work over there. :) The bars and clubs that employ djs have dj boxes (all the ones i seen anyway). Granted in the bars you are lumbered with some god forsaken mixer and very very cheap cd players (not all but alot), but once you go up the food chain (so to speak) you start to see denon and then the likes of CDJs.

I guest you could take your own CDJs but most of the dj boxes dont have room to swing a cat, let alone set anything up. Hense the reason for taking CDs, no room for lappy, and more hastle than its worth.

On another point, you have to have the very very latest in music, Thats what stands you out. Owners dont want (especially in the clubs) tracks that was big last year, they want tracks that are going to be big over here in autumn (look at Samins Heater, huge abroad in summer, big here in autumn).

Thats where a lappy is useful if theres not internet cafe nearby (not likely now days) (please do not shout me down over this, it was before produb!!!). I had my brother over here ripping my promos and emailing me them over and i was burning them to cd.

Yeah i'd take my denon's because they have a euro plug that goes into a uk plug so sorted and so its all off mp3 cds and take laptop to email home etc... I'd have to check back here for badgers tune of the week then? :D

As far as working it seems from what I've been told the majority of DJ's work 8 hours in a fun pub for about 40 euro a night :eek: the perks are all the young floozies you can handle....................oh to be 19 again ;)

Its rare to get a free room.

You've got to remember there'll be another 10 people in the queue wanting to DJ for less than you, and willing to work more hours! Its a dog eat dog world in all the party destinations.

All the big islands, everyone is a "DJ" wanting work. Small places or up & coming places are ideal to get yourself in the bigger clubs.

A room is cheap, (not sure on the going rate, as it was while since I was out doing it). Once your there for a few weeks, you'll get to know the other workers, to take advantage of cheaper food and free drinks in all the other venues.

See it as a chance for an excellent summer of partying non stop, don't expect to come back with much money or your liver intact :D

I worked in Tenerife for 5 years as a resident DJ/Compere in a cabaret bar which had live acts 7 nights a week. If you can broaden your skills to be a compere doing karaoke/quizzes as well as DJ'in there's def more work. Get there find digs and as soon as you can put yourself about the bars and clubs. Buy a sim card local to where you go aswell because the locals won't phone an English mobile number. I had a ball for the 5 years I was there and wouldn't change it for the world. I was paid 100 Euros a night 6 nights a week so I made a good living. Also make sure your travel insurance runs for the duration as they won't touch you in a hospital without it. If you get a good residency like I did they will give you a contract and pay your social for you too which will cover your medical needs. Thinking about doing this and actually doing it is two different things. In your situation (pretty much the same as mine when I went) I'd say GO FOR IT ! Takes a big pair of dangly bits to make the move but once your there and settled you'll love it.

I did a short stint in Ibiza back in 1999 working a couple of bars which were alternative/indie and all-out cheesy party venues which suited me great! They weren't too bothered about the next months chart toppers and my music collection did the job. I carried just my music collection, a decent mic and a decent pair of headphones.

As for money, I would look at it as a long holiday and make sure you are well funded for at least six weeks. This isn't something to be trying on a shoestring budget. And I would also set off a couple of weeks before the main season starts as this will give you a bit time to get to meet bar managers and show them what you're made of.

Apart from that, I also agree with everything Adam says. Don't ever take it for granted that you'll get free B&L. I certainly didn't. I did get manage to get a half decent room for about £20 a week (like they say, it's not what you know it's who you know so get networking and meeting people as soon as you get there!).

Working abroad is no good for me having the family but when you're young with no ties it's a good experience and one I'd say go for. But if doesn't work out in the first six weeks don't stay out there as your money will just disappear!

He speaks fluent Spanish and has made his life there.

Not if you cant get one because the plane is full (usually is high season). If you already have a ticket then its easier to get back than if you have to buy a seat outright.

Funnily enough, yes you can be stuck, depending on the area. I was on holiday last year in Crete. Ran out of euros and travellers cheques and it took 5 banks to find one that would accept my card (debit or credit). But 3 years ago in the alps in Switzerland, the fist bank i went to accepted them. Its difference of location.

Adam, Dazzy - Its surprises me that you didnt get board. Everywhere i worked had an apartment that staff stayed in, but all the bar staff were english and the owners put them up. That said us english abroad are no more than slave labour :D

i think you need to think about this move... abroad is not all prim and proper like i said, but i suppose you will only do what you want in the long run.

I started working for "Julianas of London" before moving onto other reputable companies, spending nearly 8 years abroad. Norway Dubai Hong Kong Bahrain Australia and finally USA.
Get a good agent or company that handles everything, clean undies and a sense of humour and you'll do OK.
Although i found it somewhat strange moving back home to Scotland in the late 90's i certainly dont regret my little stint abroad.....and made some money as well.

Not sure Charlie. It could be 16 as you can have a job over here at 16, or it could be 18. However, im sure that as far as working in a pub/club the rule is...If your old enough to drink in it, your old enough to work in it. Meaning, countries with a 21yr old drink policy would be a few years off pal. :)

Charlie, if your thinking of planning it, look at saving up for it now and going when your 18. Try and still be living at home too, so you dont have the worry of a flat etc to pay for. :)

if you know any DJ's that are off to work there, they can often put you in touch with bar managers

ive had a few offers from local DJ's who were going back to crete/ibiza and the bar owners are asking if they know any other good dj's

even got offered a job in lanzarote whilst i was there, was a decent hotel and the DJ didnt have any headphones. He was cueing up songs by playing them over the sound system and then pausing them haha. Then on the 2nd night, the sound system went dead and i stepped in and got it working for them again (only so he would play my song :p )
