Very Interesting Call today...

Hi all,

Today I actually had a call from a customer that I already have a booking for, for a wedding in August. They booked me straight after christmas, I've been and seen them, got a couple of extra services too and the booking fee has been paid.

I thought the lady was phoning up to cancel when the conversation started but she actually called up to praise me on the service I have provided so far. It is stuff like this that keeps me ticking and puts a smile on my face so I thought I would share it with you.

She said that at the weekend she went to a wedding fayre at a local venue. I know the venue vaguely and I also know (I think?) who supplies the Disco Entertainment there. Anyway, she said that she (out of interest), spoke to the Disco exhibiter there and she said she wasn't very impressed. She also said that a lot of the things I had informed her of in our meeting previously, this DJ missed out. When she asked if he would be able to visit her and her partner to go over things before the wedding, his reply was "I'm sorry but I don't have the time to do that as I work full time aswell". She also said that the fee he was asking just to supply the disco for the duration of 7.30pm - Midnight was nearly double mine and that he came across as if he wasn't bothered.

Now, as I said, I think I know the guy and if it is who I think it is then yes, he is a bit of a misery guts but I found myself almost sticking up for him. I said that he may have had a late night the night before and wasn't with it. Not sure why I said that to be honest and also, the last I heard (or his claims were when we chatted a while back), he was a full time operator.

So, this sees me asking another question. I don't tend to do wedding fayres anymore. I did them a long time ago but now my wife does them and she always takes my brochures and cards along with her and has people asking for them. Not sure if I would've been allowed to be there if the resident DJ was there too but say for example that I was allowed. Do you think he would have tried a bit harder? Do you think that when people go along to a wedding fayre and there is just the one Disco exhibiter that they just go for them rather than walk away and call up other people?

This lady said that she was so glad that she had found me and also said that she hoped that he wasn't a representation for the rest of us in the same business. It's the first time that this has happened to me where someone has praised me before I have even done anything but it was nice to hear. I wonder now whether it is worth my while doing wedding fayres again because (as you can see on here haha), I can talk a good game and I think that maybe, if I am there then I can use my skills and get the work? Also, if this guy is out there charging well over the odds (he isn't THAT great believe me), then who knows?

just shows that price is not a gaurantee of quality .anyone can put prices up but not everyone gives the service to justify the price (but they always get found out in the end)

thats what the top earners do best imo,they can sell and deliver a service and have customers at ease long before the event.

I went to a wedding fayre in my local area 2 weeks ago to help my brother with his wedding suit hire business and there was one dj, who has the residency at the venue, offering his services in the hall. I myself have never done a fayre but after speaking to , not the owner (he was there), but one of "his" dj's (who was dressed in jeans and t shirt) I was most put off by his attitude as to basically how great they are, and also how extortionate the prices are. He also seemed like he didnt want to be there and me (posing as a potential client) was most put off and would have certainly gone elsewhere.
Now this guy is so say well respected in the area as is his business. If it was me his side of the desk, I would have been far more keen to not only impress the client but to demonstrate to them what they can expect on their big day.
I walked away feeling that i could have done so much better and , agree
with shakermaker that i will look into doing these in the future.

When I used to do them it was when I worked for my mate. Both him and myself would go and he would always say "Dress smartly". We're not talking dinner jackets or suits or anything, just smart shirt and trousers. Yes, we thought the night before that spending our day off at the venue all day talking weddings wasn't that great but it was amazing just how much work came from doing it. It was also funny that there was another disco present on more than one occasion.

I think now though that if the venue puts on the wedding fayre themselves, they use their resident DJ to try and get people to book the venue. I know that one of my residencies is thinking of putting them on themselves now as they aren't that happy with the company that puts them on there. If that is the case then I may do them but saying that, I only have one function booked at that residency so far this year which isn't great.

Thanks shaker read the first post and nearly had a heart attack as I did a fayre at the weekend as I am only in the next county I tought your client was referring to me until they said they had a full time job as well. Phew :o (before you bring up a previous post Darren I went full time in October ;) )

I find that one of the biggest selling points for my service has always been personal enthusiasm - I love music, I'm a people person and I'm genuinely interested in what they're wanting to achieve for their day - given the opportunity to show this it's a tight-wad or a misery-guts that doesn't at least consider me (even if the eventual answer is no). Once I fully get back into the swings of things... well, we'll see...
