Hi all,
Busy evening for some reason with 3 enquiries. All good though and I think that all 3 will be back to book with me.
Anyway, the other day I mentioned about the lady with the potty mouth. In the end she came back to me and booked me but she did mention in her call about being let down by another DJ but also that she had contacted a couple of other DJ's who came across as quite rude.
Tonight, during 2 of the calls, the same name was mentioned. On both occasions the enquirers said that who they spoke to came across as rude and almost as if they could not be bothered. The thing that made me laugh was that BOTH of the enquirers used the word 'Grumpy'. I know who it is that they called and they hit the nail on the head when they used the word 'Grumpy'.
This thread is in no way a dig at anyone in particular. I have never seen this supplier post on here. I just think that people should TRY HARDER.
The hardest thing in this business in my opinion, is to get the phone to ring or get an email from someone looking for Disco Entertainment. Surely it is common sense that when the phone does ring or an email does come in, to give it your best and not come across as if you are doing THEM a favour?? I really can't understand it and well...their loss, my gain.

Yeah I find that it gets mentioned from a fair few of my enquiries, one client I spoke to had called a DJ and was told that she could not have much say in the music selection as he had 25 yrs experience and knew best....take it or leave it! How do these people get work?!

I'm with you on this Gary.
I don't understand how someone who does discos to earn money can respond to potential customers like this.
It makes you wonder how many bookings & how much money he's losing each year by being like this.
I rarely get to speak to potential clients on the phone, but whether they contact me by phone or email, I go out of my way to be friendly, chatty & helpful, although I'm a friendly, chatty & helpful person anyway...which helps!

Agreed Rob!
To be honest with you, I can be a grumpy git sometimes but when that phone rings with an enquiry, my 'charm mode / customer service mode' comes into play. When I first started and went 'live' to the public as a business, I was a bit nervous to start off with, maybe because deep down I thought that I was now having to sell myself to the customer to get the work? (and I didn't have the confidence to do it at the time even though I had done customer service jobs for a few years).
Now I find it really easy and second nature and it seems to work.
There's no excuse for being rude or appearing to be rude because your manner is wrong and especially with this business as it definitely gives the wrong impression. I have had customers come back to me even though I have not been the cheapest quote because they've said that they had a good feeling from me. If this is the case then I wish more of my enquiries were made by phone so I could really go for it rather than putting a whole bunch of text in an email that has no feeling.

I get this a LOT.
I've lost count of the number of people I've spoken to who have told me they'd previously rung XXXX and ...
"One of his kids answered and said he wasn't in"
"I'll get him to call you back" - but he never did
I left a message on his answerphone but he never called me back
"I'm not working that weekend"
"I'll send you a quote" - and never did
"No I don't work at XXXX anymore I had a row with the manager"
etc. etc. ad infinitum

I think one of the things that lets these suppliers down is complacency. The business that keeps getting mentioned has been supplying Disco Entertainment in my area for as long as I can remember. When I first started out and my advertising went out, they were one of a few other suppliers that contacted me to see if I was interested in working with them and NOT "against them" as they put it. Things were quiet at the time and I met the main man who was well and truly the definition of a grumpy git and (I'm being polite here), he wasn't very 'presentable' shall we say.
If I am brutally honest with you, it was HIM that was my main inspiration. I don't mean that as a positive towards him and what he was/is still doing...far from it. He inspired me to get out there and more or less showed me how NOT to do it. My aim was (still is) to eventually get my name out and about to everyone so that in the end, when people want to book a Disco, my name is the first one they think of, the first one that they call etc etc... I believe in myself and my ability and I reckon I will get there eventually, whether it's me DJing or supplying DJ's..who knows BUT I WILL get there. It annoys me when there are people out there that don't really care or don't seem to care.
