What's your opinions on these moving heads chaps?

they're probably one of the cheapest i've come across @ £250 per light, but i've seen a youtube demo of them and they don't look that bad

Get 'em from Thomann and they throw in a 3-year warranty.

I have 4 used at virtually every gig for well over 2 years without issue.
Make sure you spend a bit more and get them flightcased though if you want them to last.

What are the benefits of having a moving head on a mobile disco that is at one end of the room?

Back in 2003 I purchased 4 Martin Mini Mac's for my rig, which looked great but thinking back some quality scans wouldve done just as good a job for a fraction of the price.

Agreed, apart from the slower movement bit. Any moving light, head or scan, can be made to move as slow as you like, there's an issue of jerkyness, but that's a different topic and applies to anything that moves.

Heads can be a disadvantage due to their speed, as they cannot match a waggly mirror for fast movement. Sometimes snappy movement of a scan can be a better effect.
Obviously depends on what you are wanting to do:)

My heads aren't jerky at all. I only use them with the CA-8 and on master and slave, not DMX, hence my comments.

It's a pedantic theatre thing Daz. If you talk to full time theatre and AV engineers they scoff at 'disco' type gear because it's only 8bit accurate not 16bit. You would only be aware if you had them running at stoopidly slow speeds from a DMX desk. It's also to do with position accuracy. In theatre they tend to want them to repeatedly return to exactly the same point, oftem within millimeters, which 'cheap' disco gear can't normally do.

For what we do, 8bit/16bit is pretty irrelevent, unless you're seriously pedantic:p:D:D:D

I disagree. I get completely smooth movement with no 'visible' jerkiness on my movers.

I plan on getting some movers when funds allow. I love the idea and they can have many advantages.

Just out of interest Darren you never thought of using a dmx controller? I used a ca 8 for a long time and when i plugged in my imove dmx controller i was amazed at how much more i could do with the lights. For example using it as a spotlight, great for speechs?

I can do that with the CA-8.

Yep, I've had 2 x DMX controllers and never got to grips with them. The first one I sold and the second one I still have somewhere - it's a Transcension controller I think.

Darren im the same as you, I like master slave sound to light as I do not like dmx controllers.
