Experimenting with speakers

I am currently trying\demonstrating different types of passive speakers at the momment.i am lucky enough to be friendly with a dj shop nearby so have been given some demo speakers to try out at gigs.

Last night i was blown away by an old friends pair of "class d c128".Now they are only 12inch speakers but what an increadible sound both clear and crisp from the top with a hell of a bass punch.It is hard to believe that you can get this sound from a chineese made speaker where the cones are normally cheap made and cannot handle the same sound quality.

In the past few weeks i have had demos of njd eminence,peavey,skytec but they are not as good as the class d in my oppinion.

Not a pair of 128's certainly. :D :D Mine would run them closer. ;)

I did not say that i would choose to buy a pair of them,i only said what i felt was better sounding quality and value for money.Now if you take the peavey ul series which are quite expensive due to the black widdow driver in them i feel that for the value for money the class d was better.They may not last as long as the peavey ul series or other brands but for value for money they are very good.

I was taking this as you were saying class d was better than peavey hence why i was asking which peavey speakers you were using? Im not doubting class d is good value for money

how can the Class D's be better value, when in the same sentence you admit that they dont sound as good, not as loud and wont last as long

I have always said it is best to go to a shop and listen to speakers.

Just because one person on a forum likes the sound doesnt mean you will.

Its also gives you a chance to wind them up and see if they are really loud enough.

Nothing worse than getting gear through the post that doesnt live up to expectations.

Well its not the ideal place but at least you can get an idea of how they sound. Its better than relying on someone elses idea of what sounds good.

I agree with Steve on this one.

Having never (knowingly) heard a pair of Class D speakers, but after reading many positive comments about them from established forum members on here, whose opinions I respect, I would definitely choose a pair of Class D over anything by Peavey.

Reason why? I don't know what Class D product sounds like - but am up for giving most things (within reason) a listen.

However, I have had the misfortune of hearing various different Peavey boxes quite a few times over the years and that distinctive sound of a wet cardboard box being whacked with a shovel just makes me want to run to the nearest toilet.

If anyone is seriously considering investing in a new sound system it needs to be hired in the first instance and taken on the road so you can hear what it sounds like being fed by your existing audio, in venues you typically work.

i did it for the ac euros

i got a new pair for 85.00 pounds and i sold my ul 15 for 276 pounds i only paid 115 pounds.

because the carpet will start to come away soon, also there heavy. but peavey do sound *removed* hot, ac euro are OK will bins (i wouldnt use them on there own)

Peavey is an excellent make.

I have a Peavey hand made guitar and it is spot on.
Doesnt rattle on a single fret even right at the top of the fretboard.

Ive used ul 15's as you may well know and they are great speakers for mobile disco use. Ive used ac euros once and i thought they were awful. Each to their own i guess

have you thught about deltec speakers gary? nice sounding speakers and they do a cracking sub and tops package with 15" subs and tiny 8" tops, you could even fly the tops on your deck stand.

Hi Simon, agreed - they tend to appeal to live musicians at the pub/working mens club circuit level - weekend warrior type bands that lug kit around themselves in old Mondeos & Volvo estates that have seen better days, as opposed to bands whom use a PA hire company and travel light with just the band & FOH & Mons engineers.

Peavey do of course feature regularly on the technical riders of bands in the latter category, in fact usually at least four times, under requirements for FOH Desk, Stacks, Mons Desk & Wedges... where in emboldened text it clearly instructs the provider; "No Peavey, Behringer, etc"

I used to own some Peavey Impulse 200's, the plastic moulded ones and one night I was working in a hotel and i could see the other dj who was djing in the next room, stood at the back watching, he came up to me and said wow your EV's sound great, I said no mate they are Peavey, he was shocked!! I thought they sounded nice, it must be how you set it

i had a pair and the :Censored: i got them from riped me off :bang: only one driver worked. but the one that did was amazing i have heard 15" speakers with less bass. I am looking at getting a pair of the 500w version. :)

PV-1500 power amp (rated at 700w RMS loaded with a BWX driver)

Those who are coming to the meetup in Hull on March 27th. Will hear side by side (Peter Excaliburs Class D cabs) (My RCF System)

and lots of audio gear and lighting.

mine was one of the first 2u PV-1500s before they went cheaper. As for the impulses yeah they were good. Loud as well. 700w rms 1400w program 2800w Peak they were loaded with the original drivers which are Black Widow (BWX)

They are better speakers than the Hisys/ UL-15s tbh but now they are about £850 a pair the 1012s.

I sold them to a vocalist about 3 years ago with the power amplifier. Who had been looking for the Impulses at the time. She was a young singer.

At the time of selling them there wasnt much interest tbh in them. But when i sold them. My mate comes back asking if i still had them so he could upgrade his tops from the Hisys 2RX and use them with the Hisys subs.

I sold them too cheap i think. I sold them for £350.00 with the amplifier.
yet after i sold them i was offered £600 for them and the amp and thought damn what i have done.

The same vocalist that bought them still uses them today they were in decent condition when i sold them and they still are to this day.

If your coming down to the meetup at end of March I'll have the RCF's with me and ill guarantee you'll like them.
