Rig height in venue's

Im not sure if others of you have noticed this or maybe its just me. Obviously most venues have differing ceiling heights and these can have an impact on what your show looks like. If the ceiling is very high , no matter how high you put your truss ( and I have had it up to 3 1/2 metres high) it still looks too low to my eye. But if you have a low ceiling the same height looks perfect.

Isn't it bugging or is it just me?
Just one of my bugbears. Also if you have a cluttered room i.e old equipment chairs etc no matter how hard you try with your rig it always looks untidy because of other peoples stuff.

I hate a venue that seems to think the stage that we/your working on can be used for storage....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh(Chairs/tables/boxes and I once had a Christmas tree and it was on March)

I do a hotel where they stick you in a lounge. I had to get some custom poles for the ultimax made as the celing is so low even the lowest hole was too high and i didnt want to drill ultimax's poles. That makes for a bad looking rig.

I find low ceilings a real pain as I use Tri-lite, it needs to go up reasonably high so my gobo-flowers are high enough....scanners are ok mind.

I'm never that bothered about pianos, tables, chairs etc. as i carry around loads of black cloth and blackout material that gets drapped over anything I don't like the look of....I quite often use it as a back-drop if the wall behind me is a bit busy, really tidies things up. :)

I went to one venue recently (now on my "avoid" phone list :p ) that was new to me. First it was upstairs, which I hadn't bargained on. Second, I arrive to be shown a pool table with a piece of plywood over it. "You can set up on there" :o

When advised we had our own deckstand/gantry/assorted metalwork that really threw them. "Everyone else manages it" :bang:

So in the end managed 2 tripods with T's stuffed into corners and the console etc. plonked on the pool table and conducted the gig with my back to the audience for the most part :mad:

The reason I complied was that the only other place the pool table could go was downstairs. And the bar guy was about 70 :(


Anyways, back on topic...

There's not a venue yet that I've had a height problem with - if there's a low ceiling then the lights come down low - simples ;)

LOL - love the pool table/disco stand. I often get that especially when doing pub gigs. Whenever possible I still use my stand, but venue managers often look puzzled as to why I refuse the pool table.

I have only been to one venue where the roof was too low for the lighting. It is on a stage so managed to place scanners on the floor angled up and an impossibled on the floor in the middle. I also put a stormbird on the stand next to my mixer, and the client was really happy so job done :D. I think if I did not have a stage I would probably use par cans and an impossibled on the floor.

Wahey, I thought it was only me that got that. :D Still, it makes rigging the lights easy. :D :D :D I have a truss which spans the table. ;) ;) Console and amps on the table, lights overhead, cloth on front. Sorted. :D
