Estate Car or Van.

Hi All,

I've got to buy myself some transport for my disco and I thought I'd see what the pro's use before I do so.

I have 3 options:

1/ Van

2/ 4x4 to tow box-trailer

3/ (This is my thinking at the moment) People Carrier.

I don't really want to run 2 vehicles and would rather not drive a van every day of my life. I thought a ford Galaxy (you can remove all but front seats) with tinted rear windows and the appropriate sign writing would be spot on.

What does everyone think and does anyone use anything similar?

I use a transit van but everyone to their own :)

Personal opinion here some may disagree but signwriting your vehicle is a bad move you may as well paint a target on the side of it. All it will do is advertise that there could be expensive gear in your car which could result in a break or that you have expensive gear in your house if your nicely sign written car is parked outside.

Yeah, I did have that concern. The vehicle could be garaged but I understand that if you leave it in a car park (even if there's nothing in it) you may get someone break in and damage the car.

mercedes sprinter mate. i know you here mercedes and think pricey. but you get a good second hand one anything from a v to now your laughing. heres the thing the parts are cheaper than transit,ldv and iveco and they run forever I've got a v reg long wheel base 310 had 84.000 recorded miles when i bought it. I look after it and its some machine. wouldn't recommend anything else

how about a derv chrysler grand voyarger? much larger than the galaxy and with privicy glass, leather & air con standard too and prices are good at the moment (look on autotrader)

My old Partner recently threw a con rod, which not only buggered the engine, but took out the starter motor & the radiator too :( :mad: Very messy & if I'd felt a jolt when it went bang I'd have sworn I'd hit something.

I've been using a SWB Transit Connect over the last few weeks, very nippy & holds a lot more than you'd think.

Nothing that extreme to be honest.

Main speakers - back up speakers - 4 tBars - 4 moving heads (flightcased) - 4 scanners (flightcased) - 4 barrels (flightcased) - 2 moonflowers (flightcased) - 2 mushroom fx - back up rack case with spare CD players, amp, mixer - Main 16x10U rackcase with main gear in it - flightcase full of spare cables - Large utility table, 4 cases of CDs - and a few cases of spare bulbs, tools and random bits and bobs. It all adds up to a rather full vehicle. The van is the short wheel base model, so doesn't hold quite as much as the larger versions.

Had a SWB Transit, and it wasn't big enough. Now use a twin wheel LDV Convoy, and it has bags of space. Speedwise, not warp factor nine, but fast enough for me.

I too cruise around in a vauxhall Vivaro, I had a tranny for 3 years which came off fleabay and then sold it back on there for more than I paid for it.

(oops, do I need to re-write that?!)

The vivaro is great, and quicker and more comfortable than my laguna - plus its dead cheap to insure....

Go for the 6 speed box if you can, makes a world of difference on those motorway trips!

After a bit of fine tuning, I can get my entire rig in this space. The only exception is the cross-members of my Ultimax stand (which run along the underside of the roof & into the over cab storage area) So I can still carry 3 passengers & some luggage :approve:

If I need more rig space I can remove the 2 rear passenger seats (I'm fitting a second mesh bulkhead (from my old van) behind the front seats, where you see the white bulkhead base through the door.)

It's nearly 9 years old now, but the bodywork is in very good condition, and it's only done 39,000 miles!

I picked it up in 2005 for £2,300...an absolute bargain, considering the mileage at the time was only about 19,000!!!

At the moment I have a SWB Transit 80. It's done 92,000 miles and is a bit rusty (R reg). It cost me £1100 and came boarded out with interior lights in the back. I have put in carpets at the back too on the floor and sides to make it a bit more safer for the equipment and I have magnetic signs on it for when I'm out and about. As soon as I park up I take them off.

As soon as I get some spare cash I will be getting something like Elite DJ has.

I run an S-reg 1.8 diesel Peugeot Partner with the heavy duty roofrack. It will just about take our very biggest rig, carefully packed, with all the metalwork bagged and strapped to the roof. Most of the time it takes the regular rigs with ease and that includes two sets of Peavey Pro-15's and one Prosub. We caryy LOTS of lighting which is virtually all flightcased (must get round to sorting the impossibled and the laser ball). Should I ever take the second prosub (hardly ever) then it goes on the roof too wrapped in a tarp. Now bear in mind the furthest regular venue I play is about 18 miles, most are about 4-6 miles, and it's plenty suitable!

Bought 2 years ago with 58k on the clock for £1100. Still only got 60k on it despite being out 2/3 nights a week on average :D Not spent a penny on it apart from one service, one battery, tax, insurance and MOT! Needing some new wipers now though.

Seriously, what I drive will probably not help you, but I had a SWB Transit, and was always pushed for space. This one is a twin wheel LDV, and the extra space is beyond value, both for the day job, and the Disco. As a formula 1 racer it's a big letdown, but as a pantechnicon, it's superb. It is possible with this to fit two rigs in, as my helper does not have a vehicle big enough. May be no help, but posted anyway. :D

Yes i was worried about that. i drive a 2 seater sports car, and i use my girlfriends impreza for gigs. I was thinking of an audi TDI estate as they have space, are economical, but drive great! but as someone else pointed out, the space of a van is invaluable, so maybe i just need to sacrifice my car for business :) or are there any nifty vans out their :p

I need more room for upcoming projects and a van is the best way round it. I like the convenience of putting my trailor away at night, but as it's low, it really is starting to hurt my back.

As we supply different services, it would be easier to just take what I need and stick it in the van, rather than taking it all out of the trailor etc.

Also would it be practical to keep your gear in a van at night, so all you have to do for a gig is have dinner and get going. If i got one without a side door i can back it up against the wall. security is good these days with locks and alarms and stuff?

It might be practical, but will it be insured?

Mine goes into a locked alarmed and dehumidified garage with CCTV. Even then, anything of particular value & importance (ie computers, HDDs, projectors etc.) comes out.

And I live in one of the lowest crime-rate parts of the country.

Luckily the security's never been tested.

But there's always a first time. And you can guarantee it'll be the day before the biggest and most important gig you've ever done.

It's a 1998 mainly use it for discos & the dog , no point in having anything better as I only do 1 or 2 discos a month & the dogs dirty.
If pushed I could probably fit a small set up in my other car but haven't had to, the Mondeo has been very reliable.

It's a 1998 mainly use it for discos & the dog , no point in having anything better as I only do 1 or 2 discos a month & the dogs dirty.
If pushed I could probably fit a small set up in my other car but haven't had to, the Mondeo has been very reliable.

I have used SWB Transit style vans for some time now, several Transits, Ducato, Trafic and now a LDV Maxus 2.5...I think that it is a nicer van than the Transits, only 2 years old but so far 100% reliable and much cheaper to buy...highly recommended.

I've scanned through the thread and it's interesting to see what people drive - also interesting to see the range of sizes of vehicles that we all use to get our kit from home to gig and back again.

Mine is a Toyota Hilux Surf, Import. With trailer when required. Yes it is a bit hungry on diesel than a lot of the newer vans and MPVs etc., but I like it... And living in the back of beyond comes with the prerequisite of owning a 4x4! No I don't do school runs!!!

I have pondered buying a van or a Galaxy, Voyager type thing but can't justify spending the money on a vehicle when the one I've got get's me where I need to be and means I never get stuck in mud, snow, ice on the back roads where I live.

I do like the Ford Galaxy but don't know if it would be any good for DJing. Plenty of space tho. I would always stick to a van tho as all those windows in a car is a huge security problem and many cars just ain't build to shift alot of heavy gear. can really damage some cars in suspention area.

My Kia Sedona is an MPV. It has 7 seats and when you remove the back 5 (very easy) has about as much loading space as a Transit. The engine is 2.9 turbo cooled deisel. The car has a towing weight of 1 ton, so has plenty of power when loaded.

For an average show (2 speakers & stands, laptop case, spare cd player & cds, amplifier, up to 6 lights, cable boxes, "odds" bag, stand & goalpost) I usually only remove back 3 seats.

As for security I never leave gear in it anyway so windows are actually an advantage. They can see it's empty.

That's a good point. Even with my tints you can see in and the fact that it's empty takes away the opportunist brick through a window!!! With Disco & Karaoke splattered all over it, it's a dead giveaway what I carry but the windows reveals to a potential tea-leaf that it ain't worth it.

LDV Twin wheeler, just that bit bigger than a Transit, and a lot better Cross Country.:D Slow as Continental drift, but I can live with that. ;) When I can find the enthusiasm, and put another stub axle on the trailer, that will be back in play. Useful when two discos are on in far distant venues, I can leave trailer for my nephew to use.

My dad currently owns an old M Reg Renault Espace and the seats are a pain in the :Censored: to get out. Firstly you have to put a leaver to fold the back down so it's a square shape, then you have to pull on a fabric loop that is under the seat (only accessible from the back) to release the back legs, tip the seat forwards, before then squeezing two bars underneath the seat to release the front legs while wriggling the front feet out of the car shaft.
It's a bloody nightmare. But i have no idea on the new model but i really hope they sorted this out as it takes ages and really makes your finger kill.

Derv is the way to go with these cars, the mistake I made was getting the 3.3 petrol which does about 15 to the gallon around town! not good!
also don't get the auto I've just had the auto box done on my car at the cost of £1500! and I got it done cheap!

apart for that I've had to do nothing to the car in the last 2 years & it's a good form of transport for a Dj/band/karaoke etc! it never fails to amase me how much stuff fits in it! but get the Derv!!!!!

Ha ha, yes but not for karaoke, don't want some drunk guest screaming through my Bose poles. For karaoke I take a pair of Mackie C200s and Bass bin, along with associated amps and x-over.

Actually it's surpising how much room the Bose takes up when you include the four B1 subs.

The vivaro is a perfect size for my needs. Have to admit, I was a little concerned pre-purchase as it looks quite compact inside compared to the longer wheel based vans or the transit. Looks can be deceptive though. It holds a surprising amount of kit.

It's a Barchetta. In the 10 years they were made they only brought about 300 or so into the UK, and all are LHD which believe it or not I actually prefer. Guts-wise it's a 1.8VVT normally aspirated but at just over 900Kg it shifts nicely thanks! Such a fun drive, better than the MX5, MR2, Z3 and SLK that I compared it with when I bought it. It had to be a ragtop - it's a local by-law where I live :cool:

Can't get much kit in there though, so it's a Pug Partner van for the gig work ;)

It's a detachable tow bar. Cost a bit more but it would really spoil the look of the car to have a perm tow bar. When it's removed you can only tell it's there if you look really close, the electric plug swings up into the bumper and you can only see the part where it attaches to if you get down and look under the bumper.
