Happy St Patricks day everyone.

I've never understood why England has lots of celebrations for St Patricks day...but NOTHING for St Georges day.

Very strange.

Maybe because its a valid point.

I've only said it on THIS forum, though, as I don't go on any others!


You'd think if people were that bothered they'd arrange something.

I'm not bothered at all, I just think it's strange that people in England don't celebrate St Georges day.

It would also mean more work for all of us...as I've done many St Patricks day discos over the years, but not a single one for St Georges day.

gotta be said are we as a nation are we that proud of calling ourselves english as prehaps the irish are? Im not saying we are not but maybe a reason why....

You mean the PC councils? If people really wanted to do it then they would just do it or make enough noise about it to form a serious debate. I think most people say they want to be able to celebrate it but can we really as a nation be bothered to make our feelings known?

The way I see it is the Irish celebrate the fact along the lines of......

I'm Irish...... Wahey!......... Let's have a beer & a knees up!

Whereas the English have to be far more jingoistic about the whole thing, proclaiming themselves to be better than everyone else & generally behaving in a way that really didn't ought to be acceptable in modern society (see such TV shows as Holiday Reps & Ibiza Uncovered for examples of such behaviour).

If the English had the same attitude as the Irish (& to a lesser degree the Scots with Burns night etc), then maybe there would be more call for St George's Day celebrations.

Rob, I wasn't insinuating that you went around posting the same thing thing everywhere. The somebody was a generic somebody. Meaning that any time St Patrick's day gets mentioned, you can guarantee that regardless of which forum it is, if it's based in the UK / England there's always at least one member of that forum that comes up with something along the lines of what you said.

Let's not forget that none of them were actually from the place that they're patron saint of.

Good point, and in the case of St George, not only was he from Turkey, but he never even set foot in England!

According to a St Georges day quiz I found a couple of years ago, 75% of perople living in England don't even know the date of St Georges day, and to be honest I'd probably be one of them if it didn't happen to be on the day after my birthday.

Out of interest, I just Googled St George's Day & the first date I saw was....
