How far do you travel to a gig ?

I know that most of us would travel any distance provided the price was right, but what would you say is your acceptable distance for an 'average' gig. Currently I regularly travel up to an hour and a half each way no problem at all, but do have a few gigs booked at a further distance.

Well i only use google as my advertising apart from word of mouth which is limited to a half an hours traveling distance around cheltenham. I have gone further afield but the prices increase to the extent im not really competivite with the local djs. Furtherest ive traveled is staffordshire which took about an hour on the motorway to get to.

Anywhere within an hour I charge around the same, I sometimes put £10-20 on, but depends how much I want to fill the date!

Typically I travel between 20-50 miles, although the other week I had a gig in Guildford (110 miles), this weekend I had an uplighting and drape job in Gilfach Goch (100+ miles) and I'm down in Wareham in April which is almost 130 miles! Obviously I've added travel to all those though!

I regularly make 180 mile round trips. Although I'd travel anywhere in Scotland if the price was right.

Most of my gigs are between 35 - 90 miles away from base.

As previously indicated in the OP, anywhere for the right money. Regularly though, I don't go much further than 15-20 miles. As I don't avertise, I only go as far as the word of mouth will take me!

I've just checked my booking folder & done a few sums, and my average distance to each gig is 12.6 miles, or about 25 minutes driving time.

This year I have a couple of discos which are 35 miles away and 2 or 3 which are 20-25 miles. The rest are less than 15 miles and about a dozen of those are less than 10 miles.

Occasionally I travel 50 miles plus as a special favour for people I know, and these gigs have taken me to Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East & West Sussex, Hampshire, Kent & Essex...but I don't make a habit of it.

I'd rather do a local gig for normal money rather than one further away for more money, partly because local gigs take less time and I already know most of the venues, and partly because the further you have to travel, the more likely you are to have traffic problems due to unforseen circumstances.

That booking was near Ollerton - It was a about 2 and a half hours! It was a referal from a Wedding for a couple who live in Nottingham and had their Wedding in Lichfield, which is just over an hour.

I did put a bit on the price for travel, but not enough really.. it just so happened that I got another booking just round the hill from me on the same date, that James covered for me - sod's law really!

Cheapest return ferry is over £70 nowadays then there's the travel time aspect. Even if you time it dead right and there's no delays it takes me 90 minutes from home to Portsmouth or 2 hours from home to Southampton.

Double it for the return journey and you're looking at £200 before I've even driven to the venue.

If I was asked about a gig which involved 5 hours travelling & me not getting home until around 3.30am, I'd be looking to virtually double my normal price...as it would involve an extra 4 hours travelling on top of what I usually do.

Around 160 miles round trip---though I regularly travel 250.

I have quoted for a 300 mile round trip with an extra fee--as long as theres plenty of Motorway to use on the way its not a problem for me.

I dont do difficult cross country jorneys with no Motorways.

I used to drive to Yugoslavia for Holidays so distance doesnt phase me.:D

From my house to Dover, its about an hour and a halfs drive depending on traffic. I cover the south east but most of my gigs are under an hour away, but I also cover London.

London gigs are over an hours driving but thats not a problem when you get more money for the gig, so it equals itself out in the end.

While I'll go anywhere if they pay for it (furthest gig away from home so far is Guernsey & Jersey).

I did quote on one a couple of weeks ago for a night in Turre in Spain, i quoted about £1900 inc mileage but excluding ferry to drive there or £650 for them to fly me there and back however, they booked someone local :(

Most of what i'd term my regular gigs are between 20-50 miles from home. I do one venue on a reasonably regular venues that is about 80 miles from home.

The furthest gig i've done recently from home with equipment on standard money is Coppid Beech, Bracknell (125 miles from home) (mid week gig in Feb)

When i was 20-21 i compered a couple of tours for Dream Concerts in theatres, those locations were silly and a flat rate for each gig. I can't remember exactly the order of locations but one of them was:-

Saturday - Motherwell
Sunday - Stafford (then home to Wisbech)
Monday - Oldham (then back home)
Tuesday - Wrexham (then home)
Wednesday - Eastbourne (then home)
You get the picture..... other 1 off shows were in Swansea, bridlington, Red hill, Yeovil, Taunton (all going back home after each show).

From memory the money for theatres less than 200 miles from home were £150 and gigs over 200 miles were £200, pretty good money for 10 years ago, and considering i'd never done anything like this before & i was living at home then, and Diesel was 0.60 a litre or something stupid like that :eek:

Nice enough venue, the last time I played there I was in a cellar and due to finish at 11 PM but they were running a bit behind and didn't come through for the first dance until 10.15... :eek:

Me & James do a bi-annual gig in Edinburgh, that's about a 700 mile round trip!
I'll be doing quite a few down in Weston this year too, which is around a 215 mile round trip

I did a wedding there last year.

Not my fave venue, as I had to set up on a concrete step (just like you, Steve, by the sound of it) & there wasn't much room.

It's where they filmed a number of scenes for Carry on don't lose your head, and more recently (last year, I believe) Kiera Knightly was there filming some scenes for "The Duchess".....If only I'd been there at the same time! ;)

It was a pain for me too.. I was to setup before the meal so they could use the PA for background music and speeches.. groom assured me that there was room for all gear in a seperate "room" with a curtain that can just be pulled across when the disco starts, they didn't want to pay for the hire of an additional smaller system.

So it turns out this "room" is a bleedin' cupboard! So I had to setup my full playout system and amp rack just to play background music and then move it all out after the meal has finished!

We usually do 25-30 miles away from Tamworth at a maximum.

Generally, our gigs are within 10-15 miles.

Although our real catchment area covers 9 O'Clock to 3 O'Clock on the M25 (& there's not much there that you can't get to from Barnet within 2 hours inside of Newbury, Oxford, MK, Cambridge, Colchester & Southend), in the last year or so I've done gigs in Sheffield (2), Dorking, Winchester, Torquay, Tiverton, & (last weekend) Bournemouth. Mind you, I wouldn't want to do it too often.
