Renaming / Re-branding advice

I am currently renaming (and therefore re-branding) my company. I have spent the past couple of months seeking a lot of marketing advice and have decided that in the current form my whole company lends itself too much towards being 'a party dj'. I am seeking extra higher end weddings and corporate work - for obvious reasons ;)

I have chose a name and purchased the domain (which I am keeping under wraps for now), but would like to hear of anyone else who has done this and what the pitfalls, benefits etc are.

I am intending carrying on my existing name for any parties and also other services I offer but run under a second name / website for the more 'elite' work.

Worked well for me, I set up "perfectweddingdisco" just over a year ago and it's netted just over £5k of work at the last count, although I was getting mainly Weddings high-end stuff anyway, so it was just a case of generating more leads.

I'm still toying with the idea of a re-brand of my main name.. just to lose the "discos" part and try and lean a bit more into events & hire.. but I'm still undecided.

Funnily enough, Chris, this is exactly what we're doing right now.

We have mostly been doing weddings so have decided to give the weddings section of the business an identity of it's own. We already have the website on a new creating/hosting service. Only problem is that someone registered the domain name I was hoping for about 2 days before my web guy got the chance to do it for me! :eek: So I've had to tinker with the domain name without changing the business name (just spent a fortune on rebranding everything so don't want to change the name!).

The key to everything is the tagline "part of Lightning Disco & Entertainment" as I want to carry the good reputation we have built up over to the new business.

The new promotional material uses eyecatching graphics and are already getting comments. Time will tell, though!

Thats the problem I had. I decided to look at domain names then build the company profile around that. Most I tried had gone with annoyingly a lot of them just parked or directed to other unrelevant websites.

Got one I like last night and going to try my hand in doing my own site. Have spoken to other DJ's who have done their own and they get a lot of business through it. The flexibility means i will be able to change content as and when needed. Will see how it goes and if unsuccessful will get someone do it for me.

I've spent a lot bringing in more gear - uplighting, projectors, etc and our band are now doing 'afternoon / wedding breakfast music' (jazz/ballads/easy listening etc) so it seemed a natural progression to focus the wedding side.

I do my own website, via a builder, and its quite easy once you get used to it. As you say you have the flexibility to add and change when you want, when I get my photos done. I can upload and publish in seconds.

Thought about it. Even bought a domain and company name from another local disco that stopped trading but everyone knows me as ttiger. I get a fair few hits from searches from just ttiger. type ttiger into google and I'm there at the top. I've asked clients what they think of it and they quite like it because it is easy to remember and easy to find. A few also asked if my surname was really tiger!

A name may help but whatever name you use, it is only as good as the reputation you earn.

I agree that the service has to live up to the website, nowever at present my website (or name) does not live up to the service I provide hence the change.

Yes, but as this is a DJ forum, the heading for your website is Professional DJ & Karaoke Service, and your talk about being a top DJ I would of imagined your main target audience from your website would be those looking to book a disco or karaoke.

yes i will target doing "discos" but i could make a much larger lump out of getting the ice rink hired, lets say in an city center, prime time of the year...

which would be enough for me to live gig free maybe for 5months or so...

i really enjoy doing what i do, i do have a good experiance of discos and gigging and am allways giving people ideas, as i have a good eye, but wherever they take the info, is their choice, but am gaining more experiance aswell as helping tony out (penmare), you can never have to much experiance!!!
