I've just received the following email from my first disco of 2009, so it looks like my year got off to a good start.
It made my day, and will definately be going on my website!
I seem to be getting more & more unsolicited emails similar to this one recently, which is fantastic news.
I rarely blow my own trumpet, but thought I would on this occasion...just for a change.
:D
Hi Rob
Apologies for the delay in contacting you after our wedding on the 7th March, we have been away on honeymoon in the Maldives and it was fantastic.
xxxxx and I both wanted to say a huge thank you to you for all your hard work on the night. We thought you did a great job and were very accommodating and helpful to us.
If you ever need a reference feel free to contact us and we will give you a glowing one.
Once again, many many thanks
Best wishes
xxxx and xxxxx

Well done, it's nice when it happens. I've been thanked countless times at gigs, but very few have taken the trouble to write.

Thats possibly the problem---credibility unless you supply a contact number.
I do have people willing to do that---but not often used.
I still think vid clips from functions are the way forwards for my particular business.
Still good stuff Rob---keep it going!!!!

Thanks for the comments, folks.
My second gig of the year was another wedding last Friday which resulted in a £20 tip, and my third was a wedding on Saturday which resulted in the bride coming up at the end and being extremely complimentary about me.
I was thinking about this at work tonight, and pretty much came to a decision - I'm going to put my prices up...but that's another thread, which I'll post soon.
Thanks again for the responses.

Credibility is not a problem, as I laminate these emails & keep them in a file which I take to customer meetings. Alternatively, I can scan them in & email them to people enquiring about my service.

Charlie,
I don't have any pics of my actual gear.
The last time I took my camera to a gig was about a year ago to get some shots of the crowd for my website, but again I took no pics of my gear.
To be honest, I'm relucant to take & post any pics of my set up, as I know it would result in negative comments from certain quarters...especially from people who have all the latest, most expensive & DMX controlled lights...which I don't.
Lets face it...I get enough grief from some people on this forum as it is, so I see no point in encouraging more of the same by asking for comments on how my set up looks!

Well, then fair play Rob. It a testament to your attitude and overall service that warrants such glowing reviews, not an arsenal of moving heads. Getting the customer service down should form the foundation of any business in this sector, and is no easy task. Hats off to you, sir.

You're not as daft as you look, are you? :D
Rob, unless you're the biggest fibber since Pinocchio, then you appear to be doing it right, and not necessarily by joining the herd. I'm not sure I would endprse your methods, but as they say, you can't argue with success.
Well done mate.

Excalibur,
I can assure you I'm NOT the biggest fibber since Pinocchio...in fact I'm the complete opposite. Everything I say about my business, my prices, my equipment & the way I operate is completely true.
That's why you'll never see me say things like "loads of people came up & asked for cards at the end" because its never happened. The most cards I've given out at a gig is probably about three or four.
I see no reason in coming out with a load of BS, because I am who I am, I do what I do...and it works. After all, I probably spend more nights working in the entertainment industry than anyone else on this forum!

Easy there Rob, I wasn't implying you were a stranger to the truth. I'm just interested and impressed at how you seem to fly in the face of perceived (DJ) wisdom ( contradiction in terms, quite possibly) . Perhaps we're all wrong and you're not?
Nah,can't be. :p :p

Call me strange, but It's more of a proprity to make a decent profit so I can eat, pay a few of the bills & save for my retirement quicker.
Having the latest & most expensive gear would make no difference to my performance or customer service...but a BIG difference to my profit margin!

Nice on Rob, I've only had a handful of feedback in emails and letters but it is nice when you get them. So many people swear your the best EVER on the night, then you never hear from them again. Booze could have something to do with it.
I must admit, I'm starting to sway towards your way of thinking, equipment-wise, I would love all the latest gear, moving heads, the list is endless, but business is about profit (ask Alan Sugar ;) ) and I reckon if I (as you are) am satisfying the customer and convinced I offer value for money, why buy unnecessary equipment.
A local friend of mine in Hull (mentioning no names) is always asking me what is my next purchase. Either he has endless supplies of cash or I'm doing something wrong as he's always (apparently) buying new stuff whereas me - nope, only if I need it. :)

Exactly, and if you saw The Apprentice last night, you'll know that the reason the girls team lost the task was because they spent too much money on cleaning materials & bought much more stuff than they actually needed.
If they'd just bought what they needed, they would have made more profit than the boys & won the task. After all, business is ultimately about making money.
I think that sums it up nicely!

Well done Rob. It's nice when people make the effort to give you feedback. I went through a stage where I encouraged feedback by contacting the customers after I had done the event. Loads of them got back to me and so I used the positive comments for a section on my website.
I guess some people will say that doing that may have pressurised the customer into giving positive feedback?? I don't see it like that as I am not standing there with a gun to their heads and as most of them won't see me again then they can say what they like in reality can't they.

To be honest, I've never been one for contacting the customers after the event for feedback. By the time they're back from their honeymoon, they probably won't remember too much about the disco anyway, and to me, one unsoliticed card or email is worth 10 where I've contacted the customer requesting their feedback.
