Gentlemen: Further to a resent post about musical genre would it not be a good idea to have a sticky thread where members could post their musical specialities, then if anyone gets a call for a specific type of DJ then we just look in the thread.

Don't think that's what Mayhem meant, Darren. He meant DJ's who specialise in a particular genre or style of music. ( I think. )

Then you find the style of music you want and match the DJ to it.

I specialise in..........everything :D

Without being big headed (:D - Not me surely :D....), i can dj most (if not all) form of dance music (because i made a point of practising), have a good (IMO) working knowledge of all popular genres (granted its not as good with 60s, 70s & 80s as those who were there, but i like to make sure im up there with research etc).

I honestly feel that its part of a djs job to have a good working knowledge of all popular genres. Not be able to provide a whole night of a specialist genre off the cuff, and BTH i cant understand the mentality of "i dont like it so i dont play it", your there to provide a service and if you aint 100% with a genre, then get 100% with it. Its all professional development afterall. Just my 10p worth :)

I think it's a good idea but times have changed a lot in my view and where my 'speciality' is concerned.
I have been playing Indie/Alternative music now since 1988. Over the past 5 years...well, maybe 10 years, it has become more mainstream. I am not saying that is a bad thing but to me, it's not as exciting as it was. Gone are the times when I would be DJing at a private function and someone would come up and surprise me by asking for something that was 'different from the 'norm'. These days, I get asked at almost every function I do, for the likes of The Killers, Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs.

I'm not saying the bands are bad because they're not but they are bands that anyone can get hold of and play. I would even go as far as saying that a lot of DJ's could call themselves Indie specialists if they concentrated on the last 10 years or so of that genre.

I would say I am an Indie/Alternative specialist but also an 80's specialist too.

i'm strongest on Soul & Motown and 70's Disco, probably because I played it when it was 'cutting edge' seems a long time ago now.
