Searching Old Threads

As a newbie just starting out I've fallen foul of not finding threads which asked the question I posted, but when I look at the replies to my post they express alternative views to those expressed on the older thread, views that I perhaps wouldn't have got if the topic hadn't been raised again.

I'm not criticising (maybe I should capitalise that) but when new members join the forum isn't it reasonable to expect that they haven't trolled through all the older threads but would perhaps post a reply if the topic was re-raised?

Surely one of the aims of this forum is to share ideas, I know that's why I joined, to get advice from people who are actually doing the job and to draw on their experience.

Use the search facility, find what you are looking for, if that doesn't help post a replay for further help. Simples

I've tried reading that a couple of times, I can't make sense of it I'm afraid :S

My suggestion would be to find old threads first and if they don't answer your question, then to reply to those old threads, bringing them back to the top of the new posts list.

This way all the advice stays in the same place and new members can find it all! If everyone did that then there wouldn't be any issue.

Yes I agree that seraching old threads is a good idea, and it keeps all the replies in one place (which is great), but what I was tryinmg to say was that I had noticed on a question I asked that people gave alternative replies to those that were on the older thread, and I thought this might be because newer users never saw the older thread but having seen the newer one they added their comments/viewpoint.

But one would hope they would also add their viewpoint to any older threads that were bumped back up to the top. Alot of people even reply for a second time when this happens, not realising it's an old thread!

Different people have different opinions Simon. Also, opinions change through good and bad experiences.
