Last night - Awesome!

Hi all,

I'm sure I mentioned it previously but yesterday I was DJing at the Mirrorman festival in Winchester. It ran from 6.00pm until 01.30am and the lineup consisted of various electronic acts and DJ's with the special guest being Gary Numan who did a DJ set too. It was a sold out event and I had a prime slot DJing just before Gary Numan. I've been a huge fan of Numan's since 1979 so it was awesome to be on the same bill as him.

My set ran from 10pm - 11pm and I played a mix of industrial & electro which went down really well with the crowd. I wasn't nervous at all like I thought I may be and that was because the other DJ's who did sets didn't really get much of a reaction. To be honest, some of them were really up themselves and quite rude. There was one in particular who took over from me in the chillout area who got me quite riled. I'd never met these guys before so they didn't know what I did for a living but it was no excuse. As I handed over to the other guy I said "Good luck mate" and he answered..."I don't need any luck mate, I know this crowd"...I ignored that comment. Then I said to him "The mixer is up to the hilt as the volumes are set low, it won't get any louder as Paul (guy in charge) wants it like that"...the reply I got was "It's ok man, I DJ a lot, I know what I am doing"...That's a fair enough comment but it was the way he said it which was quite aggressive. I simply said ":Censored: you then mate, get on with it". Funny thing was, he was working off what looked like copied CD's and as I walked downstairs to get to where Numan would be playing soon, his track skipped about and stopped - I laughed.

Numan was excellent. His set was an awesome mix of Industrial, Electro & Mash Ups. He worked off Albeton live with 2 x Apple Macs and Techno DJ Ade Fenton was alongside him. The crowd were really up for it and it was amazing even though it was a DJ set. I managed to get to speak to him and get a photo and also bung him a copy of one of my mixes which he put in his laptop bag. Also spoke to his wife Gemma who took my number and said she would guestlist me at the next gigs. It was also good in that I didn't realise they had heard my set as they were in the backstage area behind where I was playing. Gemma commented that Gary had laughed because I played 2 tracks in my set that he was playing in his (NIN - Closer / Prodigy - Spitfire).

All in all, a great night apart from Mr 'up his own backside' DJ. I made some good contacts and I think there well may be some good things coming out of this.

Excellent! Well fair play to you sir for biting your tongue. Some people just won't be told, even the 'old hands' need a little push sometimes. But as you know it comes with the territory.

Glad you had a great night, I have had experience with these sort of dj's before, the ones who give you the Big "I Am" talk, I remember one and he came on and his mixing was like a day at the grand national, I just laughed and walked away.

I'd be very surprised if that picture of you standing next to Gary Numan doesn't attract some positive interest and potential clients. I'd be inclined to pop that up on your site, maybe even a 'special events' page for work that doesn't represent the equipment hire side to your business..

Surely if you can get those sort of gigs, you needn't worry about where your next bar mitzvah is gonna come from? I bet your fees are ridiculous :p

but when he first hit the DJ scene, he was Djing at a local black tie ball, all the flyers etc, bigging him up

they got to watch him pretend to mix on a set of technics, whilst the mix CD was playing. If only the crowd knew....

It seems a few folk are trying their hand at djing. A friend who runs a promotion company keeps getting emails through offering the likes of an Arctic Monkeys DJ Set (or Killers, was the last one i heard). Basically you get a member of said band come and play a set for you as a bit of extra cash for them.....

PS - Would defo be getting that photo out doing the rounds Gary :)

The promo companies always offer DJ's who do residencies, bands to go along and DJ at their clubs. It's usually up and coming bands. I remember DJing in Southampton and The Delays had a new single coming out so they played an hour set alongside me.

Johnny Marr from The Smiths DJ's a lot as does one of the guys from the Inspiral Carpets. Gary Numan isn't doing it because he wants to join in the whole 'I'm a DJ' brigade and he isn't interested in the whole retro thing either. He looks to the future and doesn't look back and concentrates on new material. I think he does it for fun but obviously gets paid well for it. I heard that last night he got around £2500 for about 90 minutes which isn't bad.

I never even thought of using the photo as a kind of advertising thing to help me but I may just do that...mind you, how many people are going to remember him?

Absolutely the only way to get it, that I know of, is on the compilation 'Beats by Dope Demand IV' (Very hard to find as witness that THIS (http://www.netsoundsmusic.com/nsudsii/2/384755571/143/2.html) is the cheapest I can find anywhere - new copies on Amazon for £70+!).

I don't know about that...I can't believe that newspapers & celebrity magazines always check with the celebrities agents before publishing photos, including those which are clearly taken without the subjects knowledge.

I remember buying MOS tapes mixed by Pete Tong and Boy George. I bet boy george paid someone to mix his for him lol
