View Full Version : New Setup - Decisions, Decisions...

Hey,

As you may know, I'm going to start my discos up again after my exams (mid June). I'm thinking of making my rig as easy as possible to setup by making a prewired truss, or at least a cable loom where the DMX & power cables drop down where my lighting will hang. (I can make 'Thru' cables should i choose not to use all the lights)

First things first, i would like to replace my truss. I'm currently using your typical 3m ladder trussing (HERE (http://www.disco-world.co.uk/stands-brackets/citronic-goalpost-trussing-stand/prod_295.html)). I have been looking at some 3m Giraffe triangular truss (HERE (http://www.giraffemusicstands.co.uk/?page=product&group=Light%20weight%20trussing&id=86)) to use above my 1.2m ultimax stand, however having set my current truss & ultimax up in my front room this morning, i think the 3m will be too much truss. I.E: There will be a fair amount of truss having over either side. Having said that, I've got enough lights to spread out. Also, because my deck stand is 1.2m, i could use the 1.5m section of truss for smaller gigs.

Next, a centrepiece.

My current lighting consists of: 4x Acme Dynamos, 2x Acme Magic Gobos & an Equinox Nebula laser. I set it up like:

dynamo - magic gobo - dynamo - laser - dynamo - magic gobo - dynamo
(as shown in the old picture below)

I'm looking for a centrepiece, preferably LED & C-8 compatible, that will be good for slow songs, yet packs a punch for the faster songs. I had the 10w Acme Invincibled in mind, what do you guys think?

As i previously had mentioned, I'm considering making a pre-wired loom that will distribute the power & dmx cables across my rig, so this should reduce setup time.

What do you think about my new plans?

Thanks, Ollie

P.S: I wasn't sure what section to post this in, as it's not really technical help. MODs, feel free to move if necessary!

sounds good to me, and you then have a nice range of lighting going on!

Looks similar to my lighting rig, I was considering the miracled as a centrepiece?

Like the loom idea too, I think I'll knock one up this weekend.

Thanks for your replies!

I had also considered the Miracled as a centrepiece, but i'd want more 'movement' really.

I'll make a shopping list of the parts i'll need for my cable loom, but really i'd need to know what truss i'll be buying first. Any suggestions? I like the giraffe trussing as i've seen it in use at one of Matt's gigs, but would like some feedback on whether the 3m would look stupid on a 1.2m deckstand. If i was to get 2m of truss, i think i'd have too many lights for the trussing and it'll look overcrowded.

Why not do something similar to me Ollie. Have the existing 3m truss for those larger venues and for your regular set-up just use 2 dynamos. I was in two minds at first, but two looks really good.

A mystic led in the centre would be good with plenty of movement, you need a different controller though american dj stuff use there own controller.
Stuart audio in rushden has one in stock for £99. They are very hard to get hold of at the moment with new stocks not being supplied until June.

Hey Steve! Thanks for the reply :)

Whilst being driven to Sainbury's (interesting experience to say the least) i had another idea. How about... I buy the 3m of giraffe trussing, and for the smaller gigs, use 1.5m above my ultimax and for the big gigs use the 3m of tri-truss on my current trussing stands?

Hey James :) Thanks for the reply!

I'm going into Fabtronic (i'm sure you know of them as you live in N-hampton) tomorrow to pick up a couple of cables and Lloyd is going to demo some LED lighting to me. I believe they have a mystic in, so i'll get a demo of it!

I use the half piece of truss over my 4ft stand for the smaller gigs Ollie it works quite well.
I would say the 10watt invincibled but you know I already use one lol.
If you need cables I have tonnes of spares let me know what you need if I have some spare you are welcome to them. P.S not sure fabtronic is open as its bank holiday friday.
If you want to see how the truss will fit on your stand you can always come round and try a bit of mine first just to make sure.
Pic below is what it looks like without lights.

Hey Matt! Thanks for the reply :)

I knew you'd be biased to the 10watt invincibled haha! It's a cracking light. The cables i've ordered from fabtronic is for my new office at home (for my studio monitors) and they open tomorrow, but thanks very much for your offer :)

I've got some more studio work coming in, so will have the cash for 2x 1.5m sections & the two truss adapters in no time! I need to get the uprights for my ultimax too, but i'm considering getting the giraffe uprights as then i know the truss adapters will fit the uprights.

Just got back from Fabtronic and picked the cables up. They demo'd the ADJ Triphase 10w LED and it's awesome so i think that'll be my next purchase!

Out of intrest, does anyone own one of these?

If so, are they any good?
