Mic instructions.

Does anyone have mic instructions to hand out to people before they use a mic.

Don't do this, or this, or this.....do this....etc, etc.

I constantly find when you give the mic to people for speaches you tell them not to walk into the speakers and what do they do.....:bang: :bang:
You tell them not to hold it near the switch and silence....:D :D :D

Just wondering if anyone had a one page document - then I can forward it on with the enquiry to prep them....so to speak.

If no one has one that I may shuffle about i'll write one....but I thought I would ask first.

Personaly i dont, But we do a residency where feedback is a nightmare due to the layout of the room, noting can be done to avoid it, And to solve the issue were quick on the fader, Doesnt realy help but its how we do it

I don't think it matters whether you tell them or hand them an instruction sheet...as soon as they get the mic in their hand they'll revert back to their own way of doing things.

I verbally instruct them on the correct way to use it. If they walk toward the speaker I'll either kill the mic or turn down the treble to reduce the likelihood of feedback. If they hold the mic at waist height I'll lower the volume enough so they'll turn to me to see what the problem is. I'll then raise my hand up close to my mouth as a visual cue for them to hold the mic nearer their mouth. I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but those work for me. :o

Hold the mike like this (quick demo) speak very close to the mike and speak loudly.

Well thats what I do personally and it ssems to cut through:D :D :D

Needless to say they always get the mike too far away from the mouth:eek:

1) Simply holding the mic will not allow it to function to its full potential. Placing it nearer than a foot from your lips will amaze you with the efficiency increase.
2) The following actions may prove fatal. Throwing the radio mic in the air. Dropping it. Walking 6" from a HF unit at full chat. Tapping it. Blowing down it. Swinging a corded mic round your head by the cable, like a bolas.
3) I've possibly spent over £200 on this mic. I didn't do that for you to spend ten minutes muttering banalities into it, nor for you to scream down it telling everybody to party.

Tony, I can see that you have received earnest, erudite, and valuable advice. May I suggest that you ignore all of it, cos shovelling sand against the tide is a really pointless and tiring exercise. ;) :D

It really amazes them when you take back the mic which either whistled or was silent in their hands, and with no adjustment at all proceed to speak forth with clearly audible results. :eek:
I'm getting a rifle mic next. No punter involvement. :D

To be honest, I don't think this would make any difference Tony.

I always tell people to hold the mic close to their mouth & not to go near the speakers, but they never listen...so I don't think handing them some printed instructions will change anything.

I for starters when starting out sounded like a 12 year old girl on the mic because i just simply didnt know how to use it properly.

Now i dont even use my "normal voice". I put on a "voice" and it works wonders and thats given alot more confidence.

I know we tell them right before they pick up the mic but sometimes people just arent paying attention.

I think its something we have to keep saying to customers but we'll get the odd one that will run towards the speakers waving the mic around.

Good idea!

Alternatively, you could tell them that if they don't hold the mic close to their mouth or if they get too near to the speakers & cause feedback, the mic automatically cuts off for 15 seconds.

Then, if they do either, you can subtly switch off or fade down the mic on the mixer for 15 seconds!
