What accounts software do you use ?

Been using Kashflow for a while, Wondered if anyone used anything else,

Not a template. Just a basic income/expenditure spreadsheet that I setup. I suppose there are accounts software that will provide more features, but for a small business like mine it just wouldn't be worth the extra expense.

Well yeah, But compared to kashflow which does my SA to, Would take along time to get excel all setup, Might just stick with kashflow does my invoices bad debtors etc etc

If you can't be bothered with Excel then why not give Microsoft Office Accounting Express (http://www.msofficeaccounting.co.uk/Default.aspx) a spin?

It's my favourite price for software, £0.00. :D

Bear in mind it's a 185MB download though.

In a few clicks I can see exactly how much I spent on phone calls, stationery etc. or how much I've spent with a certain supplier, compare with the same info with the previous year.. there's loads that you can't do easily in excel.

I keep getting told by my accountant that 'there aren't any loopholes', he is merely there to ensure everything is categorised in the correct place. As long as he categorises correctly , I am happy. ;)

Couldn't agree more, especially if your like me and hate paperwork. I am amazed how my accountant deciphers my figures, but always manages.

Well I don't do everything myself, my mum's an accountant so I do get a bit of help, I'm not convinced I'd save anymore by paying someone.

Regardless of whether you use an accoutant or not, it's still useful to use an accounts package yourself too, it'll probably save on your accountants bill as well!

I disagree, but then I have to have audited accounts. All I give to my accountant are the figures which he needs to prepare the company accounts, so whether they are in Excel or Sage or anything else, doesn't make any difference. It is the numbers he needs, not a fancy package to look at.

For a sole trader, that only equates to one job per week at £200, Darren.
Licencing and any other expenditure is an aside, as you are talking about turnover, not profit.

As an accountant is a professional service its business expendature so pays for itself out of your tax reduction. I will get one when needed but am now firmly in the excel camp - as for templates search microsoft online there are loads, im very good with excel so was able to set up a sheet that serves me fine.

I keep paper records for my own porpoises just so I now where I stand, then file every bit of paper relating to income and expenses in a box folder which gets handed over to my bean counter to put onto his system....he handles it all from there at a very reasonable rate which as has already been mentioned is tax deductible...he pays for himself :)

As someone famous recently said, I don't pay an accountant AND the tax man ;)

I used to use MS Accountancy but I've used Sage for sometime now. I amost got a job working with Sage in my younger days but I left Apple to work for myself for a while instead. My HNC project was to design and produce a capable accounts package so I've got a bit of knowledge of how this software works.

It really is overkill for what I do though!! ;)

Same here. I'm actually a programmer in real life (bespoke B2B stuff) and I've written enough accounting modules/applications in the past to last me a lifetime. I did start off using Quickbooks personally, but all of those off the shelf packages are far too complicated and overkill for what I actually need.

I now use one of those Collins accounting books (it doesn't crash or get corrupted), and leave the rest to the accountant who knows infinitely more about what's what than I do when it comes to our friends at HMRC.

The way I look at it, so long as he's doing his job and keeping me out of trouble by doing the accounts and tax returns for me, he's worth every penny he charges.

Well as both a DJ and a qualified accountant its easy for me.

I use a bespoke designed Excel spreadsheet but with lots of bells whistles and Macros that give me all I need for my own peace of mind and enough to satisfy the tax man.

Apart from the money that is.
