Uplighting

Hi guys,

I have been thinking about offering Up-lighting for a while and wondered if it is worth doing and what lights I should be looking out for...Are they Par56's?

How are they connected and how much wiring is needed for example, 4, 6, or 8 Units?

Also, what is a reasonable price to charge as extra for up-lighting?

I have ordered a set of 6 Pars from Thomann. There £33 each so they wont break the bank and if someone decided to destroy one its cheap enough to replace!

Uplighting can be done in several ways, the obvious option is par cans. But Megabars, the led strips, can be a cheaper way, as they are about £200, and Par cans can cost around £80 each.

You have to decide what you are going to uplight, whether it's a pillar, a whole wall, or your booth, and make a decision what to buy based on that.

Most of the guys that use uplighting, will either link them together, making one unit the Master, and the rest slaves, or DMX Software.

It depends on what element of control you need, if you want them all the same colour, then the Master/slave option is perfect, but otherwise a controller/software is required.

Cheaplights.com, is an option. They are USA Based, but still cheap.

They're not all brand names though.

LED Pars from Thomann. £33 cant argue with that. Forget importing from the US.

I have had a look at Thomann and they look good - 8 nice shiny Silver ones to start off with me thinks! :D

I have a Hardware DMX Controller already and a Software-based one too, so I should be all right that way.

What is the best way of setting these up? Should I just go out of one can and in to another, as normal?

Also, How long should I order cables to link them up? Would 10m each do?

I think the general consensus is have them approx 3 to 5 metres apart - depending on the room. If you have them linked up, you can pre program and store your most impressive displays.

Yes, daisychaining is fine.

You'll need lots of cables of different lengths to keep the installations neat - there's rarely any scope for coiling excess cable except perhaps in marquees when it can be stuffed between the skins.

I keep a crate of each - DMX and power - of different lengths - 1m 2m 5m 10m and 25m colour-coded with insulation tape for fast identification.
