What do people do for the answering machine message on your house phone or mobile with regards to your business?

do you do the message yourself?
do you add in music/musaq etc?
do you just put the standard supplier message on?
or do you use some pre recorded message by someone else (voiceover specialist) or software?

Agree with Neil.

I suggest leaving a CLEAR note of their phone number==quite often its so garbled I cant work out the number or have to replay it 10 times.

Also ask for a date and brief details if possible so at least you can start on a postive note by saying you are available---if you are that is:)

I often also find people mutter on the phone like they do over the mike and you cant work out what the :Censored: they are going on about:eek:

Now if they all had a clear speaking voice like Rob;)

BTW I dont need a new answerphone or a hearing aid--just people who can speak proper.

I suffer here because we get calls from all over Britain so the regional accents can be a nightmare:bang:

I have one landline & one mobile, both of which I use for my business and personal use, as I see little point in paying for two landlines & two mobiles when at least 90% of my enquiries come via email.

My landline answerphone message was done by myself in my best & friendliest voice, has no music or other crap & simply says "Hi this is Rob, Please leave a message and I'll get back to you soon"

The answerphone is on all the time, but is set to answer after 5 rings, so if I'm there I can answer in time, but I don't have to remember to turn on the answerphone every time I go out.

My mobile has the voicemail turned off, as I'm not interested in having to mess about to get the messages, so they can either call back later or leave a message on my landline answerphone. After all, nearly all enquiries come through my website, which lists my landline as well as my mobile number.


Now if they all had a clear speaking voice like Rob;)

in all fairness rob an unanswered call in my eyes is likely to result in the caller not booking your service. Dont get me wrong you are clearly very good at your job its just merely the way I see it. I dont mind spending a few pence here and there because i'll gain it back ten fold with the extra bookings. I even pay for calls to my landline to transfer to my mobile so I answer every call.

and anyway, 4 keys and 10p is not the end of the world when you could be getting a £300 disco.

Your stance seems a little bit over the top Rob, did a mobile phone abuse you as a child? Have you been cheated on in the past with your Nokia seeing a Samsung behind your back? Has the woman on the automated voice mail system been nasty to you? :dunno:

I have a separate business line and a separate fax line. I also have a separate home line as I think there is nothing worse than someone answering the phone with screaming kids in the background or someone not passing a message on.

To be honest, I think I make it easier for customers to contact me than many people. Not having a day job I'm here most of the time until about 7pm, so if anyone calls before then on the mobile OR landline they'll usually get a reply.

Also, it's worth mentioning that many people hate leaving messages on voicemails & answerphones, so even if I DID enable the voicemail, many people wouldn't use it anyway.

Bearing that over 90% of my enquiries & bookings come by email, and most of the rest come on my landline, I really don't think than not having voicemail enabled on my mobile is as much of a problem as some people seem to think it is.

No Steve, I just don't like mobile phones, and only have one out of necessity, mainly for emergencies really. I find them expensive & unreliable. I hate hearing those stupid ring tones, and I hate seeing all those people breaking the law & endangering others by concentrating on their mobile phone call rather than their driving. I think that pretty much sums it up!

In all fairness Rob i dont know if its a generation thing or not but mobile phones are fantastic. You can contact anyone anywhere. Its my alarm clock, my main point of contact with customers, my watch too and its only a very basic old phone until I get a new one. Some new phones have great cameras, sat nav and media player functions.

You know Rob, theres a marketing opportunity here.

I guess a lot of us convert more phone calls to business than emails--unless your rates are suicidally cheap.

So more phone calls should mean more completed business?

Why not emphasise on your web site that as a FULL TIME PROFESSIONAL you are contactable most days in the office on your LAND LINE and available to discuss without obligation etc?

That might increase phone traffic I think.
