Projector screen

I've been booked for a pool party in late June and the client wants me to project videos and graphics onto a screen. I have found this lycra stretch screen that can be used for back projection, does anyone have any experience of this system?

They are really cool and really easy to operate. As you attach them by bungees to either stands or surrounding rigging. Give me a shout if you need any more ideas on the videos and graphics. Cheers MAX

I think exactly the opposite :eek: Compared to a normal rectangular screen they look really cool :cool:

It depends on how you rig then. If you rig them between x2 upright pieces of truss and then internally light the truss this looks pretty cool as almost makes it a feature!!!

Buy 2m of This stuff (http://www.fabric-world.com/Fabrics-Lycra-c1_24/White-Lycra-p313.html) and get your mother/wife to sew some eyelets on, and you will have a screen AND change out of £20 (Spandex & Lycra are the same thing)

I know it won't be fireproofed but I think lycra melts rather than burns (correct me if I'm wrong)

I haven't use it as a screen, but I have bought 2 x 3m lengths and split them each into 3 triangular shapes giving me six 3m long triangular shapes which I stretched and rigged in the roof space of a venue with fishing line, then lit them with LED par cans set to scroll through the colours. It looked amazing and only cost £30

I agree with you James.

I guess it is function dependant, the bed sheet wouldn't be very well received at a conference.

That's why you have fastfold screens for conferences and these types of screens for parties so that it doesn't look like a conference!

Yeah it might look ok with some uplighters and maybe some other fabric shapes with LED lighting around it or behind it... but i'm sorry personally i think how that video shot is (well the picture of the youtube video in the first post)it just looks cheap and nasty no matter what the setting or function it's been put in for.

Perhaps it's just how it's rigged on that goal post stand.

Sorry I don't have any photos, I did take some with my mobile phone, but they were rubbish. The next time I get a job where I can use them, I'll take a video and post it.The big problem is finding suitable fixing points to tie the suspending lines to, not every venue has suitable points and they wouldn't take too kindly to screwing eyelets into their walls. The other problem is the height, you need them well out of reach of the guests, and that causes access problems if the venue doesn't have suitable access equipment.

Good point. I think this is why you would always need to do your own rigging for them!

I've got a bunch of home-made ones of different sizes - I used the stuff linked to earlier in this thread but bought from eBay for about £5 per linear metre and eyelets from a camping shop - about 1" diameter.

I generally use them for rear projection strapped across those cheapie Maplins 3 metre gantries (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=17792) as these can be set to 3m width or 1.5m width and height adjustable up to about 3m as well. These are great for hanging starcloths off too.

Some venues with stages often have curtain rails and suitable anchor points on the floor which work perfectly with bungee cords and on a couple of occasions I've even strung a cloth across the front of my regular Ultimax deckstand and moved the console to a table sideways on.

Extremely versatile, they look great and work very well with rear projection or as others have suggested, just to hide stuff in which case a bit of LED uplighting looks cool too.

If you can get one that will "wash-in" it would be a lot better.

By Wash-in, I mean put the liquid in the washer machine with the lycra stuff. It gets adsorbed better (usually) and makes sure that the whole piece of material is covered.

............well that's how it works with tents and waterproof clothes anyway! :D

Provided you've bought 4 way stretch as opposed to 2 way stretch material it's the same basic stuff. There are differences in denier, (weight) and in composition ie cotton spandex, polyester spandex, satin spandex, spandex is just the brand name of the stretchable thread knitted into the fabric

I don't really know to be honest, if you are planning to use it as a front projection screen I would choose satin myself, if rear projection I would go for something less reflective and a lightweight denier, since the light need to pass through it

I'm going to make 2 or 3 in different sizes for projecting and backlighting, imo there is no point in paying 150$ for something you can do yourself. By the way did you notice that the stretchyscreens aren't fireproofed?
