Name your event

Hi,

Some of you know i did an event last friday which was based around a rave style event.


But im thinking of moving into an event with music that everyone knows.

Such as the charts etc etc

Im trying to think of an event name but cant think of anything.

Someone in Sittingbourne runs 'Base' every two weeks. I was thinking of 'Bass' or 'Treble' :lol:

Na seriously i cant think of anything.

My under 18's nights play mainly current music so all styles of current is played.

My under 18's nights go by the name of "Flirt". & my over 18's nights are called "Revive".

Maybe think of something along them lines.

Im looking for something simple but when you hear it or see it somewhere you go 'I know that from.....'.

What's your target age group?
What else is going on in the town?
What's missing?
Are the any niche opportunities?
Look at your prospective marketing through the eyes of a potential customer - what appeals and makes them want to come to your night and bring their mate/s?

Don't try to compete with an established night, as it will be an uphill struggle with a far greater probability of failure.

When writing your business plan, apply realistic numbers - if any costs come in cheaper than plan or if the door is greater than anticipated - it's a bonus. Obtain several detailed quotes for cost elements such as marketing, security, theming & decor, sound & lighting hire - so you know what you're getting and that you're not being exploited or worse still, being sold something ridiculously cheap by someone clueless.

Don't budget on making money on your first few nights - if you budget to, you will have either over estimated the door, underestimated costs, cut corners (or all three!) If you do break even before plan, then well done and power to your elbow!

Lastly, if you are running an event in a private hall (as opposed to a club like Steve does) check with your insurer that you have sufficient cover for all aspects of public liability, employer liability and product liability if applicable. I assume your policy is in the name of a parent or guardian whom will be present, seeing as you are a minor.

None of the above is glamorous stuff - but it's what matters most if you want to be a successful promoter.

What else is going on in the town? Just that base every other Friday
What's missing? Themed nights

No im not doing it for that at all. Im doing to have a good time due to other people on the dancefloor having a cracking night off the street corners up to no good.

Well, I would suggest you pick the music and work from there. I know you're not old enough to go out to the clubs, which is unfortunate because you could learn a great deal from the music played at commercial clubs such as Lava Ignite.

The typical playlist would revolve mainly around current chart music, with a good amount of dance remixes included (the Bimbo Jones type). Throw in the usual classics, like 'Summer Of '69', 'Livin' On A Prayer', 'Jump Around' and so forth, and you have a winning formula!

This type of playlist may not appeal to guys of your age, but it appeals a lot to girls of your age, in fact girls of any age really! So on that basis, where the girls go, the guys will follow...

You just need to come up with a 'cool' name, which doesn't necessarily have to be anything at all to do with the music! The aforementioned 'Lava Ignite', for example, isn't a musically orientated name, and neither are 'Flaunt', 'Space', 'Heaven' or 'Oxygen' etc

Id rather play all my harcore lol (no suprises there!) But I dont mind playing Akon etc. (loving the bass on right now (na na na) ). If I do another event im gunna ask a few girls at school to help promote as they'll defo get a big crowd in.

This is only from my experaince from going to clubs. Some clubs only play a certain genre of music but from what I have seen, most play chart and dance.

As you will be playing to 13-17, I would stick to pop, dance, remix stuff. This is where DMC, CD Pool and Mastermix (to name a few). Buying these cd's will vastly improve your music collection if you want remix music that what the clubs play, well close anyway.

I use DMC and from the under 21st birthdays I play, it comes in a treat. I collect the DJ Only and DJ Essentials series.

They have alot of contacts with Clubland artists, I know exactly how big they are as I used to DJ for them last year.

I'd love to be able to say that I'm imaginative, Charlie, but I have to admit I'm NOT.

That list was actually a list of some of the pirate radio stations in London which play dance music, and I thought some of them sounded like names which might be suitable for the original poster's promotional nights.
