I often wonder how many people lose work when replying to potential customers.

How hard is it to give the post a quick preview (or spell check) before hitting 'Submit Reply'?

One of the worst ones seems to be "their", "there" & "they're", which was so common that I did a thread to explain the differences.

However, I've noticed others recently, such as "piece of mind" for "peace of mind" and confusion between "advise" and "advice" and even the use of "properly" instead of "probably"

If the forum rule about posts having to be in English was strictly enforced, the mods would spend most of their time deleting half the posts!

It is scary - with the explosion in communication by text messaging and instant messaging, young people are growing up with complete disregard for the Queen's English, the written word and even good old fashioned, well spoken, verbal communication.

What will it be like in, say, another twenty years time?

One particular example which is "red rag to a bull" to me is the improper use of the letter "R" as an abbreviation of "our". I find it ten times chavvier than a burberry baseball cap worn backwards in Basildon!

There are two things that really annoy me, one is the lack of the pronunciation of the letter 'T' in computer and water.

The other thing is the replacement of 'th' with 'f' i.e. I fought I did that, and I hit my fumb with the hammer :bang:

My step daughters do it all the time and I'm always pulling them up on it. I think they just do it to annoy me now :bang:

I do have dyslexia but if some of you don't want to believe me than that's fair enough. I see a lot of people say it on other forums as well as an excuse.

I do remember saying this within the first posts of joining this forum I think.

I always use google to spell check and words but I guess there are a few that I still keep getting wrong.

I don't think these type of threads are directed at those that make an effort to better themselves, as you do by using a spell check etc. My grammar is atrocious, but I at least try to go over my posts to make sure they're readable. All we can ask is that people at least make an effort. These threads are directed more toward those that don't. :)

I've always considered my spelling in particular to be very good, but I was amazed when somebody pointed out the incorrect spelling of the word liaise on my website. I thought he was joking until I checked it in a dictionary, as I was convinced the spelling was "liase"

In all seriousness though (and I've probably said this before), if someone makes a post littered with spelling mistakes, lacking any punctuation, and that's not to mention grammar - why should anyone have to take time and effort to decipher it?

I recieved a phone call this aft from an apologetic Penmare. Let's face it, if I lived in Lincolnshire, I'd apologise. ;) He was apparently following the teachings of one Mr Buffet.

My new red rag is cellphones that have txt spk [sic] in the predictive text. Great, take lazy spelling, and make it EVEN lazier!

Speaking of texts, why, oh why, has the plural of text become 'textes' or 'texters'? Seriously, you listen to some people, "one text... several texters". Seriously boils my blood, that one.


For those that have expressed an interest in improving their grammar and punctuation - and I know I've said this before - invest in 'Eats Shoots and Leaves' by Lynn Truss (http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=en&q=%22eats+shoots+and+leaves%22&scoring=p); it's an easy read and lays out the basic grammar and usage rules in an easy to understand and entertaining fashion.

Lynn's biggest pet hate is the misuse and abuse of the apostrophe. I think that, ironically, lazy speech will be the saviour of the apostrophe as, with the examples given of the omitted 'T', that we will have to write, when quoting certain people, "wa'er", "compu'er", etc.

The apostrophe will also allow us to correctly spell that Hip-Hop/Ebonic/African-Americanism, 'A'ight' (for 'all right') which, to be fair, is not so far different from the now accepted spelling of forecastle (on a ship) as fo'c'sle (pronounced to rhyme with Vauxhall), which has been around since at least the 18th century (first use of forecastle was early 15th century, apparently).
