I recently signed up to the paid sponsored listing with yell.com (I know what many are you are going to say, but from looking at where past bookings have came from the book and Yell.com still yeild a high percentage of my bookings round here. Weve only just go the wheel sorted in Cumbria, so were a few years behind :D ). Anyway, it was going to be £345 (thats including VAT) for the listing and I was told that, obviously, people searching Mobile Disco in Workington would put me at top of the list (with a weblink), and when people searched Mobile Disco in *insert surrounding area* it would fetch me up as "serving *insert said town*", along whit any other sponsored listing, as it soes whit a hand full of other paid listings.

The listing went live, and i checked it out. Guess what, not "serving surrounding areas" when i search outside of Workington. Yell want £345 for the privalige of putting me at the top of the list for 5 other discos.:eek: :eek: Apparantly i need to pay for the "Sponsored Listing Plus" which is about double the price!!!!

Luckily I've not paid them as yet, and I've told them that I'm not paying and they can cancel their sponsored listing and put me back to the free listing.

The are back on the phone with trying the hard sell now. Apparantly i can be found in a Carlisle search if they make my address Workington, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA14........

They are also trying the whole "we SEO your site with the weblink" etc etc, and they have a new layout which allows you to list pictures additional info etc etc (same as what freeindex currently do, erm for free.....)

they did the hard sale to a 16yr old friend of mine, luckily he asked our advice first!!

£700 odd and they guaranteed him 4 nights a week work!!!!! Blimey!!

Yeah, theyve not left me alone since i told them not to bother, 4 phone calls in one hour......

I could have accepted the £345 cost for the sake of appearing in the top five searches for any of the major towns in North Cumbria and Carlisle, but for one town alone..... no chance! :)

Same old story with these companies especially Yell. I have had a few adverts with Yell and to be honest they are very overpriced if you ask me.

Spent £1000+ this year and wished i had not as unlike last year my site/goole maps is working better at the moment. we will see as it did very well last year especially for christmas. Have been forgetting to ask where they found us etc.

I always have a little tick list on my wall which helps at the end of the year.

wont do next year. they are pushy but all marketing companies are. they know that they are ditching the book?

I saw the salesmans look to the other one when i asked the question. they did not say anything though.

Same as bt when i said to them why should i pay them for web hosting when a couple of djs i know have free hosting.......

Its only because i refuse to get a credit card that i cant get a free listing. Might get one cut it up and use that as its only for id purposes i belive.

I have to say the lady from yellow pages was using this in her sales pitch in a not very round about way. She also said most nightclubs and bars would look in yellow pages for their entertainment which we know is garbage.

as deckstar says above, the person from yellow pages covers the same area as the 16yr old lad im referring to, its amazing how a salesperson may lie when they know they are dealing with someone so vulnerable and so green to the world

I also got told that by having the paid listing on yell.com i would be inundated with enquiries. They also mentioned to me that the website is bigger than the book in my area. When i asked them to prove it (i know that it isnt), they changed the subject.

Commission only salespersons will say almost anything to make a sale and fact rarely gets in the way. Honesty isn't a prerequisite for such positions, although the ability to tell bare faced lies whilst keeping a straight face is a definite advantage.

a1dl, when they cold call you, they dont know your age, but they can quickly work out that you are young and an easy sale, i think this salesperson thought he was onto a good thing
