Does anyone know how to run an led can from one master and up to 20 slaves so they all change colour at the same time without a contoller, just leads - ideally a slow change.
I am using stairville par 64's.
Thanks :)

Not bothered :D I'm not going to pay £80 each for ones that may get broken by someone! (Uplighting.)

And how exactly would they get broken then? They are mainly metal with a load of leds.

Mine are probably the same. they only have dipswithces and music auto controls. can you not do it by the dip switches?

I would have thought so. If the par can has a audio mode then surely you could select the cans to work in a master/slave mode.
I could be wrong though :)

You are. I had 2 quite a while back and couldn't master/slave them.

I didn't say you can't DMX them, 'cos with a controller you most certainly can. I am talking about plug and play, master and slave.

Just buy yourself a cheap and basic controller. A much cheaper option than buying the more expensive lights.

If you Master Slave, whatever the Master can does, they all do, Simple.
So, just set the First one on a chase, using dip switches or LED Panel, and Wallah, the rest of them are doing it.
Setting vary from unit to unit, so I can't answer your question in full without knowing which Par Cans you have, or are going to buy.

BUT THEY DON'T DO MASTER / SLAVE!!!
I bought a 6 channel controller (just over £30) and it works a treat. Here's the link (http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_ddc6_dmx_controller.htm)

do you have to keep moving the sliders? or can you program it?

You can move the sliders as follows:
slider 2 = red
slider 3 = green
slider 4 = blue
slider 1 & 5 about halfway up moves them to colour change (independantly i.e. not all the same colour) and you can adjust the speed of change on the back of each light. (I have 4 Stairville LED PAR 56's)
You cannot program the controller - you would need a full DMX512 desk to do that (around £80-£120)

im looking for somthing that can do sound to light, and unsure what to do,
I have a question....
Admittedly it is a stupid question, but hey, the sun's gone to my head...
If you had a bunch of LED pars that are not master slave compitable, such as the stairville units and 1 unit that did have a master / slave feature.
Could it be possible to set the dip switches on the stairville units accordingly and then create a master / slave system.
Answers on a postcard please....

Well if you set them up so that all the cans have the same starting address then you only need the 5 or so channels and you change them all at once and they do the same thing.

Yes, i know that's possible to set the dip switches and use DMX controller.
I guess a different way of asking the question would be to say is the output from a LED par can which is capable of acting as a master unit, a DMX signal or is it another kind of signal?

we know the stairville units dont work master/slave so the question is if we bought a more expensive can that dose work master/slave and use it as master/slave would it work with the stairville units?

Jaydeedrinker, Im not sure where some of your facts come from, But he wouldnt need anywhere near a full 512desk to program a few par cans
Infact the easiest way for CJ to get a full flexible system, Would be a usb based dmx dongle circa £50

But you don't need a desk darren with 512 channels 192 channel or 64 would suffice to be honest

Its probly the cheapest way for cj to program the stairville cans, at £50.00 for a dongle
The software would have 512 min

I think JayDee was saying that a controller such as the Stairville DMX Master would be the required controller, as you can program scenes. I don't think he was specifically saying that 512 channels would be required, Jake.

Or this* if you don't want to use a laptop (sound to light, programmable, etc etc). You can pick these up for about £20-£30 second hand.

Incidentally, you're probably right, you should be able to get all of the can's to act as "slaves" if you bought a more expensive fixture which is capable of acting as a master - but here's the caveat, the fixture would HAVE to use the same DMX channels/functionality as the can's (e.g. channels 2/3/4 would need to be treated as R/G/B intensity and channels 1/5 would need to do whatever the can's do (I'm not familiar with these fixtures so I don't know what they do :( )
* denotes that I am in no way advocating the above product as a "quality" DMX controller which can compete with a full lighting desk, but instead as a cheap and nasty solution which is likely to "do the job" :D

Correct, the only reason I mentioned DMX 512 is that is the correct terminology. People usually just refer to it as DMX these days though.
Yes a £50 dongle would work but you would need freestyler or some similar DMX512 software. I got a DMX dongle but can't quite get my head around any of the free software. Seems too complex, all I wanted was a few scenes and sound-to-light functionality, I even purchased a small portable mic for the laptop, only saving grace was that it cost about a fiver.

The LEDJ range can work as masters in the sytem so what every it does is repeated on other lights., all makes will work as a slave but you need to match the DMX channels as different makes use different channels for different function.
The LEDJ range only use 4 channels RGB on channels 1 2 and 3 plus brightness / strobe on channel 4. These would be within your budget as thay are about £70 from CPC for PAR64 floor cans.
Other PAR cans use 5 channels as mentioned here
