Well I've read quite a few newbie posts and also dropped in to these forums from time to time, in fact whenever I have had a question relating to disco or karaoke, and always found lots of useful information so I'll start my introduction by saying thanks.
I have been involved in DJing since I was 14 yrs old starting in the local community centre doing the junior discos twice a week. I did these until I was 17 when I got a jobs in professional theatre, television and conference and exhibitions on the technical side (sound lighting and stage) this lead to a decrease in DJing as most theatre shows were on the night and I often worked 7 days a week. I DJed on and off for the 12 years but probably more off than on if i'm honest.
I then spent some time being a roadie for a very good club singer while also doing some DJing for about a year.
As I have family in the pub trade, I was often offered work in pubs around the North East, while visiting one of these pubs I 'discovered' karaoke I mean I thought I was Elvis, the Drifters, Elton and whoever else was in the book even once trying the Bee Gees Tragedy (haha and it was just that a tragedy)I became very good mates with the presenter and started helping out. Eventually as his business built up I started presenting karaoke and spent less time DJing this became the mainstay of what I did uring the 90s. Having a residential in one pub (Terminus) for 6 years Fri Sat Sun nights.
During this time I also decided I needed a complete career change and went to university for 4 years while there I went to a typical student night in the union bar and they had a karaoke night..step up Elvis, we all had a great time so we turned up next week thinking it would be on and guess what? it wasn't, well student money isn't the most in the world so never one to miss an opportunity I spoke top the bar manageress who informed me they were very unreliable so I offered my services and thats how I kept myself for my 3 years at university and also for another 2 years after that - doing Tues Wed Thurs nights at various student union bars.
I have worked in many bars around the North East, until I had a break for 18 months, maybe I was getting too old, I was retired and didn't intend getting back on the road but I was asked to do a friend a favour and from that party ended up doing 3 years in the pub Fri Sat night and fully back involved. :confused: When the manager changed I stayed for another year and then left. I was asked to move to another pub and do Fri, Sat, this pub has it's own Mediatheme machine and currently this is what I use to deliver Karaoke Disco Quizzes. I have reduced my nights to Sat regular and Fri when required, and I must say not carrying the gear everywhere appeals to me. and although the song choice for karaoke and disco is not perfect, it is very good.
Well I think I've used my next 5 years postings up with this intro :zip: . I tend to be a reader not a poster so you'll not see my name on here much but I appreciate greatly the information posted on here, so thanks to all the people who post. :)
