This year's road trip

Each year myself and Mrs VV take a road trip. Couple to 3 weeks, 8-10 destinations, day/two days max in each. Mid-late August.

This year we're going somewhere new to both of us - Scandinavia. Now I've flown in and out of a few of the cities before on business trips, but never done the drive, so am looking for any hints & tips - recommendations & put-offs - from anyone with prior knowledge.

The rough itinerary so far includes:

- Bruges 1.5 days
- Copenhagen 2 days
- Stockholm 2 days
- Ostersund (Sweden) - 7 days with trips out to several "nearby" places including Trondheim and the fjords in that locale
- Oslo - 1.5 days
- Gothenburg - 1.5 days
- Sonderborg (Denmark) - 0.5 days

Plus lots of driving inbetween. Plan to use the bridges (Storbaelt & Oresund) rather than ferries. Sick of ferries :o

When visiting cities we like to stay just outside - within 30 minutes drive/train ride.

Bruges 1.5 days
Not a bad stop but not on top list of places in Belgium :o
If it were me I would push on to Gent....very nice but, transport in Belguim is very easy to navigate and on time. Buses are DeLijn company and they are located at every train station. When the train is mentioned it will be at the station at 10:30....it will be 10:30.

I also have a very good contact who works for the company. I will send an e-mail to him.

BTW - the beer is superb and the food....slightly on the French side but also very good. (Chips and Mayo a must)


Copenhagen 2 days

Great place....try the open sandwich.....if you love fish, you are in the right place.
Tivoli Gardens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivoli_Gardens) is the place to visit in the main square of Copenhagen and across the road is Rosy McGee's - very nice pub/rest with a very weird air cooling system - fan's and pullies system.....walk further down the road and you can find lots of bars/clubs.
People are really friendly and no hassle...but drinking in Copenhagen is exspensive ......I payed (about 6 yrs ago) £20 for 2 pints of Guiness and 2 pints of Stella.....I kid you not. :eek:
In Copenhagen there is a part called "Little Holland"....again if you like fish...plenty of good places to eat. Back to the main sqaure and there is the oldest world time clock....worth a look.

It's because Mrs VV saw "In Bruges" a while back and made me promise to take her next time we're 'passing through'.

We regularly do Germany/CR/Poland/Austria so have gone whizzing past many a time.

It is nice.....and you will have a superb time.

Fact - The Belgium monks first brewed beer (Trappist beer) because the water was unfit to drink....so they brewed with it.....so they could get a drink. Each beer has it's own glass and gets poured a different way. I stop in a small hotel in Leuven (home of Stella) and he has no less tha 250 beers on sale......in Ostende they have a bar with 500 beers on sale....all Belguim.
