Hiya Guys,
Been looking at ebay and have come across these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/B-Stock-Mackie-SRM450-V2-Version-2-Active-Speakers_W0QQitemZ200335565128QQcmdZViewItemQQptZU K_ConElec_SpeakersPASystems_RL?hash=item2003355651 28&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1688%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318

When these speakers came out they were retaling at like £1500 a pair. Think you can pick a pair of new ones up for about £1000 now. Has anyone purchased any from WhyBuyNew.co.uk? I understand they are B stock but seem a good price, with warranty. Is it worth it?

I don't think they were ever built in the States. Designed, yes, but originally built in Italy. If you are going to get a pair built in Italy they are going to be at least 5 years old and possibly knackered.

We care to dither, However buy the chinese ones and see how long the amps last :)
And the italian units have RCF components

I have 7 people who work for me who have had theirs for between 3 and 6 years with no problems. I suspect the amp modules were all built in China anyway. They used to use RCF drivers and were built in Italy. I've never heard of them being built in the U.S. unless you can enlighten me with a link and info?

Out of interest, have you done a side by side comparison and owned and used both on a regular basis?

I have'nt done a regular side by side no, However the amp in the usa / italian is of better calibre, Recently i've heard of a fair few of the chinese amps going duff, And they have'nt been overdriven,

I have bought a few things from why buy new on ebay and they have been excellent.

As for the V2's, they run a lot cooler than the original V1's, the bass is better in my opinion and they are quite a few kilograms lighter as well.

I would say go for it if. :)

I think from darrens earlier post, We need to have done side by side do an effective comparasion

Feel free to do one if you can get the people together.

I'm sure this had been suggested before with other brands of speakers as well.

Lots of input from forum members but everyone was busy all of a sudden.

If anything I would get the correct audio testing equipment to measure everything.

Everyone humans ears are different so how can that be a fair test?

OK then, you get this test done and report back to us with your findings. :)

alot of the early arguements on this thread are about V1's

these are V2's, they are lighter, have a totally new amplifier in them and a different bass driver. Becuase of the new amplifier, they run cooler and are also lighter, because of the bass driver, they dont blow up so easily!

The horn is pretty much the same, the bass is meant to be superior

active, good sound, good quality, good reliability and look good too, if they are what you want, then get them, whybuynew are very good at customer support

Yeah, but that is fairly inconclusive. A couple of people who have stickers with made in the U.S. with made in Italy over the top is not really proof is it?

The people in that particular discussion also say the HF units are better in the Chinese ones too, so what does that prove?

Whybuynew are well regarded from everything I have seen.

I've not seen a bad word written about V2 Mackies.

As for the V1's, I'll maintain a dignified :zip: :D :D

Actually, I've never run them down, never owned a pair, and I have put forward a plausible theory for the perceived overheating problem. Please note the word in italics. ;)

I agree with Tom.

I've bought a number of things from whybuynew.

It is B grade stock, which usually means it has been unpacked & displayed at a trade show, or it doesnt have its original packing or it might have one or two small marks on.

However, the b grade stuff I've bought from them has looked brand new to me.

Go for it!

Sounds reasonable to me--give them a good pasting and then sort it out under the 12 month warranty if theres a problem.:D

I would just like to echo Rob's comments about Whybuynew, I have used them about 4 times and had no problem with either purchases or next day delivery, even had some speakers delivered on a Saturday AM once. Can't help with product knowledge but that seems to have been covered.

I love my V2 Mackies, had them for a few months now. Much better than the v1s, they are lighter and the bass is clearer imo. According to the specs they are slightly louder too. They don't run nearly as hot either (compared to the old V1s). I paid just under £1100 a pair for mine, so that looks like a bargain as long as they have a 12 month warranty.

Thanks for the input guys, Much appreciated. whybuynew are doing the V1's for £749 a pair, they are also B Stock. So for an extra £146 its probably worth going for the V2's, you think?

In all seriousness, though, £146 extra is a small price to pay for the V2, as they are 5kg lighter & have digital amps, which are more efficient & produce very little heat, making the speakers more reliable than the V1.

Just think you'll make that money back on not replacing the driver that you will most likely have to do with the V1's?

Why do we have to go over this again and again...

A few of them overheat, but not a massive percentage. The ones that did overrheat were the original ones and it was a well known fact there was a problem and they changed the design.

A lot of people were thermalling their cabs as they weren't running them correctly, eg: past 12 o'clock.

And Neil, I'm not absolutley sure where that piece of information comes from about replacing drivers? That's something I've not heard before on the 450s.

I was led to belive the overheating led to a proplem which caused an "buzzing" which if left unrepaired caused the driver to go?

If im wrong please feel free to delete or edit my posts

I can't say you are wrong, but I haven't come across it before and I have spent a lot of time on Mackie forums discussing failings of other Mackie gear, but not the 450s.

.
I've seen it suggested that some of the overheating ones weren't actually overheating, they only thought they were, due to an incorrect setting on a safety circuit. Don't know how true this is, but makes sense to me.

its the 1501's that blow the drivers, Mackie now supply a 16ohm driver to replace (instead of 8ohms). Apparently this is an improvement, but in reality it just means its 30% quieter!
