I am delighted!

My Dad was days away from auctioning off his old 7" record collection and today, I had the opportunity to cherry pick out the ones that I wanted. I've just got home with an awesome wedge of tracks including 4 original Beatles tracks, 3 Bowies, 2 Queen, Temptations, ELO (Mr BS), Black Sabbath, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Dylan, Hendrix etc, plus a number of other less classic, more personal tracks from my youth.

Was just wondering, and this is one for the older DJs, What have you done with your old 7" collections, and whats the best way to look after them?

I've still got mine and they are racked in storage. (well, in my parents garage, where they have been for the past 12 years)

Mine are in boxes in the cupboard under the stairs.

As I still only spin 100% vinyl my records are all packed in flight cases, I can honestly say that I have never sold off any of my vinyl, I just love it all too much, so much good music and even better memories.

So, my follow up question is, Have you ever had them valued?/Do you know the value of them? Insured?

About 10 years ago I sold all my vinyl to a second hand record dealer I know.

I only got about 10p a copy, but I was happy with that, as I simply didn't have the space for them.

Now my CDs are obsolete too, although for legal reasons I have to keep them, so they're in a couple of cases in the bottom of my wardrobe.

One thing to no to is lay thye stacked flat, or near a radiator, or the fridge. Keep then upright and at a level temperature :)

Oh yes Rich...there's just room for a bed, a chest of drawers & a bookshelf too!

You need to understand that I live in a one bedroom flat, so I have no spare rooms, no loft, and would never store anything in the garage...so my bedroom is the only logical place!

Therer are those of us who might have considered a Two bedroom flat as a good idea. ;) ;) You could run two discos then. :D :D

as to the question of what record collections may be worth my answer to that is as much as someone is willing to pay

Indeed...which is probably somewhere around 10p per 7" single.


There are those of us who might have considered a Two bedroom flat as a good idea. ;) ;) You could run two discos then. :D :D

I DID consider a two bedroom flat a good idea, Peter, and that's just what I was hoping to get.

However, my budget was only £62,500...which was enough for a one bedroom flat, but not one with two bedrooms.

Mine are stored wrapped in polythene with silica gel sachets, in proper-sized 12" and 7" cardboard boxes (100 platters per box) and kept in the loft where the temperature is more constant.

Every couple of years I get them down to check condition etc. (make sure there's no mouse activity!) and renew the silica if necessary.

Correct me if Im wrong but if you did get an two bedroom flat couldnt you turn one into an office and offset some of the cost as an expense?

Ive also got an one bedroom flat however Ive got all my stuff in storage.
