View Full Version : My New Life Starts Here!

Hi guys. Some of you will know me from other forums (DJ, Denon, Bose, Ots, Derby County  , etc.). Having spent most of the last six years on only one UK DJ forum I thought I should spread my wings a little and see what else I could learn from other DJ's.

I live in Bournemouth having moved here from Crewe two years ago but I am originally from Derby. I left full time employment at Christmas to concentrate on running my own businesses. DJ'ing is one of those businesses. I turned 40 three days ago, but I am quite happy about that!

My target market is upmarket weddings, corporate, etc. I avoid pubs, 18th's, 21st's and sports do's. I have been using Denon gear with the Bose poles but recently did my first Ots only gig and I am totally converted. I've never been into lights preferring to use my Brokenswing all night at every gig. However, as part of the move to become more professional I am now running an all DMX LED light show along with the KAM 3D laser. I don't use smoke or haze and I don't strobe.

Since moving down to the coast two years ago I have only done a handful of jobs because of the full time work I was doing. As a consequence I am re-introducing myself to the world of DJ-ing with parties for friends and family over the next couple of months. If anybody would like a spare pair of hands for one of their gigs in this area then I'd be glad to help out.

I'm hoping this forum will enable me to learn more and introduce me to some new friends.

Hi Ben,

Welcome to the forum, I have to agree with Darren that's a great introduction.

I also have an all LED light show with a Kam 3D laser and I would be so disappointed if I wasn't allowed to smoke or haze - why the definitive statement?

Thanks for the kind welcome guys. Five newbies in one day...Mobile DJ'ing must be on the increase!

Nice to hear from you Andy! Glad the HZ's are still in good working order; selling stuff to mates doesn't always end well!

As for the definitive statement about smoke, haze and strobes, in my opinion it's all to do with offering a professional service. Before you all jump on me (!!) I know it doesn't make me a better DJ and it certainly doesn't make me any more professional than any one of you, what it does is just remove one or two headaches for the bride or whoever books me. They don't have to worry about any of their guests who could suffer from asthma or epilepsy and I don't have to worry about smoke alarms.

That gives me an advantage over someone who uses these items or who doesn't specify whether they use them or not. When talking to a potential client, it can make me sound more professional. But, given the choice, of course I'd like to use smoke/haze! It can turn an average show into an amazing spectacle!

I hope I'm not coming across as an arse on my first day!

I think it's what you are used to. At the moment, I prefer their forum layout to this one. But I've been posting to it for years so I know all its nuances. There are a lot worse forum layouts...there's one music related forum that doesn't even have a search facility!

We did get on OK, I'm glad you remember. We share some musical tastes that others found quite unbelievable for mobile DJ's! My favourite track is still Pretty Vacant, the best gig I ever went to is still The Offspring and I can listen to The Bloodhound Gang for hours. Yet I still enjoy the cheese, too!
