A quick aside from the Star Wars stuff.

After the second room turnaround on Monday when we'd finished rigging the disco gear and were getting ready for the first dance, the hotel manager came in just as I was re-robing. He seemed surprised that I was getting back into costume, so I pointed out that a scruffy red T-shirt, shorts and trainers was hardly suitable attire to preside over a wedding disco.

I've had a few people ask me if I want or need a chair behind the decks so I can sit on backside all through the night. I always stand but have been told on more than one occasion that there are DJ's that sit down and "just press buttons".

In his defence, I have been known to go out in my slippers by accident. I nearly went to work in them the other day. It was only when I got in the car and the clutch was hard to press down I realised :eek:

Quite often im leaving the house and the mrs will point out i might want to change my footwear.

As a rule I only have a chair for long dinner dances as I can dissapear behind the decks while everyone is eating. But last weekend was forced to sit down during my gig as I had bad food poisoning only 2 days before that put me in hospital for 24hours.
As such felt pretty justified sitting down 5 minutes in every hour on Saturday lol. Not feeling great that night by any means.

I once had a client that was typing up a running order and aked

"what time I would be taking my breaks so that she could put it in the schedule?".

Can you imagine stopping the dancefloor and saying I will be back in 10 minutes see you after the break!!!!! Well I guess if bands can get away with it!

On the chair debate I am always asked if I want one? NO!

I always refuse a chair as I take my own :sofa:

In my defence though I suffer from a bad back and have a bulging disc which will not go back in place. I use a breakfast bar type chair so I sit at almost the same height as standing. I always mention this to clients and have never had any problem. I roughly stand for a about 50% of the gig.

quite a few times when i have set up earlier in the day i have returned to find a chair placed behind the disco but as i always stand i just move the chair out of the way.

there is a guy up my way uses two ipods and he sits behind in the corner reading his paper does'nt even bother with a mic and he seems to get away with it,amongst the other dj's round here he is always refered to as silent night.
had one of his customers ring and book me for a functions,one of the questions she asked before booking was do you just sit down all night?i assured her that i certainly did not,oh good she said when we had the other disco for my husbands birthday we had to keep going round and poking him to see he was still awake

At my cousins 18th my auntie booked a recommended DJ from one of her friends (didnt use me so I could enjoy myself).

They were a husband and wife team - pretty scruffy, and used a paste table with no cover or cloth and 2 £15 vasto's. you could see their legs under the table as they sat down all evening up on stage in center view (all the stage white lights were on too) browsing their laptop for songs...and she had big slippers on too!

Thats the suprising thing, most of the time I don't think people care at all how you or your setup looks.

Its shocking really. If you hired a plumber or electrician to work in your home and they spent half the time sat down reading a paper it wouldnt go down too well. DJ'ing is no different, its a paid job and some choose to go about it differently to others.

Personally I would feel stupid walking in with my dad's paste table and setting up on it.

Yeah, I always stand. When I'm at a wedding though and its just background music or the speeches, I sit, but pull my chair round so everyone can see me. I sort of pretend to laugh and nod to the speeches and act interested. :)

As I use a wheelchair I always have to sit down but always ask for a bar stool or something higher so I'm not hidden behind a desk but I can still reach the laptop etc.

Ever since I've been DJing though I've been noticing peoples setups more often and do like having a natter with who ever is DJing and seeing how much better their setup is than the stuff we have at work haha

Two points here.
(1)I have done a gig with odd socks , and even one with no socks ( dont even ask why :D )


(2)I always stand , if fact I`ll boogie about the back of the stand , even to the point of coming round the front to encourage the audience on certain tracks ( not at weddings I hasten to say).

i stand all night, boogie when the crowd get going, i find if i sit down, its harder to get up again! Especially if its a long gig or ive done a kids party beforehand
