What was your first car

Thought it might be interesting to see what peoples first car was straight after passing their driving test, this was mine purchased in 1979 for £300 not the actual one but very similar a Hillman Avenger 1.6 wow

Wow that bring back memories. I owned one of them for 3 months when younger. Purchased for £40 ran for 3 months then sold for £60 :D :D

My first car was a little Austin Metro. It had no floor, sills, (you get the picture). It cost £20. I restored it to former glory and added a MG turbo engine into it for good luck. It went like :Censored: off a stick. I have some photos somewhere. Eventually I added a 6R4 bodykit and Cobra seats. It was my pride and joy. When it died I sold all the parts and recovered all the costs.

So I had 3 years motoring without costing a penny for the vehicles - wish I could do that now. :(

I bought the car when I was 16 as I worked at weekends in a garage and passed my test in it 5 days after my 17th birthday. :cool:

My first car was a Swallow Doretti, I bought it in 67, the car was suprisingly cheap but it cost a fortune to insure, and then the company went bust after just 4 months, I couldn't afford to reinsure it, so I had to sell it :mad: Still, it was fun while it lasted, I wish I could have stored it away, they are worth serious money now. Aluminium coach built body (Swallow pram Co) and Triumph TR2 mechanics and very quick for the time.

My first ever car, purchased in 1973 after passing my test, was a K suffix (1963) Wolseley Hornet. I paid £95 for it

It was a Mini variant (998 cc) with rear & front wings, illuminated grille badge & a canvas sunroof !! :cool:

Like this one but mine was white with a royal blue roof :D

I passed my test last year, 2 months after my 17th Birthday after having 12 lessons.

My instructor was already booked on the date of my test so I had to do it in this car - I hadn't even had a drive in it!

I had two non-runners that a mate and I turned into a good 'un.

A mini traveller 1300 with a bust engine, and a mini 850 with a good engine but rotted to death. Spent a weekend transplanting the engine & gearbox from the 850 into the 1300 (it fitted, surprisingly), hooked it all up and took it for a test drive.

The accelerator was very unresponsive and we thought we'd goosed it, when I gave the manual choke a tug and we screamed off up the street :eek: We'd only crossed the accelerator and choke cables on refitting :D

Ten minutes later one working mini, lasted me about 3 years and we took it all over the country. Plenty of room in the back for the gear.

I had one of those as my third car, the second being a Sierra.

My XR2 was the newer version than yours Tony and was only 2 years old and came in black. I had a Janspeed exhaust (sounded like a tank!) and free flow air filter etc and it went like stink! It was very posey too. ;)

My first car was a Vauxhall Corsa B 1.2i. Nothing special but cheap to run.

I also used to call my car the tardis and now you can see why. I was able to get a full rig plus me and a roadie in there. No word of a lie, the full setup is what I got in the corsa. lol.


Yes the boot lid did shut and no it was not a huge spoiler. lol.

First car I bought was a Datsun 120Y - about 25 yrs ago.
Off a dealer I knew for £600 (he wanted £800).

It lasted for ages.....kept going until the main strut rotted through.
Good old days with rear wheel drive...

first car Talbot Horizon 1982 model (not the car in picture but same model and colour). I purchased it in 1989 when I passed my test. Not my first choice of car but was much cheaper then an escort at the time.
It sadly died one year later when it lost an argument with a tree.

My fave jingles were the "Why welcome brothers & sisters..." and also the Rob James promo where it says I'm short, balding & nearing 40!

Both those jingles were recorded by Dave Pearce. That was back in the days when he was one of my best friends, and before he became rich & famous, and I didn't!


I remember when Garry did a review on how he became a DJ and his life, which I found fascinating. I think if people like yourself had the time to do something similar then it would be great.

I'll try and get round to it sometime. :)

I was lucky as my first car was bought a few years back was a spider. Before i bought my house and spent all my money.

Cost loads to insure and kept breaking down, but it was worth it :)

Nothing as flashy as many of you i'm afraid. 1959 Morris 1000 van, back in 1969. Took my driving test in it and passed. It was the type that had the indicators on the roof above the front doors. Got piles of record boxes in the back, pair of garrard decks, amp, two speakers and a rope light. Happy days.

RTTS is most certainly still alive!!

I'll be making the trek down there on the 21st for this years event. It'll be my 12th one, first went down in 1998 and caught the bug (no pun intended :p ).

My first car, I bought off my grandpa for £600, was a 1975 Fiat 128 1100 in red. I passed my test in it 2 weeks after my 17th birthday in 1979.

It had steel wheels and I've been able to recognise them ever since! :D
