Ive been given a uniform for when I DJ at the youth centre

On tuesday I was pulled into the office and told that when Im DJing they have sorted me a uniform. I instantly was worried and when he pulled it out of the bag I nearly screamed.


Its a BRIGHT PINK tshirt with a spider on the back.

I'm going to feel like an absolute idiot hahaha

at the end of the day we all have the right to refuse a booking,if the client wants something unreasonable,but there is nothing wrong with them asking you to wear something to get in the spirit of the party.the right money i will wear anything or nothing:eek: but at the right price of course. for the op i would ask why pink and why i can't get another more appropiate colour with a black spider on it

I suppose when you have been a Pontins Bluecoat and dresed up as Postman Pat, Barney, Dennnis the Menace and all the pontins characters as well as wearing a bright blue suit with a gold shirt for work no other costume/uniform bothers me!

Although we are DJ's do you not class yourselfs as Entertainers aswell?

We do entertain people with the music we play?! (well some of us :D)

For instance if the party was fancy dress and the client asked you to get in the spirit and dress up, this is entertaining the client in a way aswell.

If people notice you have made an effort to join in with the "fun" then I don't see no harm it that.

On the contrary, I do plenty. In a nice fitted suit! Plenty of repeat bookings too and no complaints or requests for black tie.

Why? It has been the dress of corporate/higher market DJs here for years.

There is also the etiquette thing when working at either black tie balls/formals or Masonic type functions which are nearly always black tie.

It could very well be that I've been wrong all these years. It hasn't been pointed out to me by the clients though, and the repeat bookings would imply that it hasn't been an issue.

I personally wouldnt mind what I was asked to dress up in, I would try to see the funny side. I have been used to dressing up for stage in all sort of attire over the years so I would just get on with it.
As someone has already said, its all part of the service we are paid to provide.

I played in a 70's glam band a couple of years ago and I ended up looking like a cross between Bowie and beetle juice.

Is it really part of the service though? Surely common sense from communicating with the client deters what you wear? I'm not a hired goon that can be told what to wear. It's fancy dress, fine I'll certainly get into the spirit of things and dress up accordingly, same as I'll dress accordingly for a 21st, a wedding or a corporate gig. It's not part of my service to be told what to wear, I'll make that decision myself from the information I have.

I don't see any problem with asking the client what they want. I have actually taken a couple of bookings where the client asked me if we were the DJs who wore black tie as they wanted it for their function.

Im with Darren on this one. Done a wedding a couple of weeks ago at a really nice hotel and I went in black tie because I wanted to not because the client requested it. I would like to think clients and protential clients would be impressed with an well presented DJ. This includings basics like having a shave etc... too.

In terms of fancy dress I cant imagine it being requested often. Ive done a few themed nights and took it upon myself to dress up again not because the client wanted that but I wanted to.

Within reason, I'll wear whatever the customer requests. I've had years of suits, and was always delighted to start throwing my clothes off when thus attired. :eek: :D

As for pink outfits, don't make me post that picture again. ;) :D We have quite a few younger readers, who might not be ready for it. :D

Basically, as someone said, we are supposed to be entertainers and service providers, so within some very loose parameters, what the customer wants, the customer gets. ( Does that mean I provide a bespoke service Darren? :confused: Sounds like I'm going upmarket! :eek: )

Look Max, I don't have a problem with you personally, but do have a problem with people giving out advice with little or no experience on the matter.

I am not a technical person, therefore you will not find me posting about amps or DMX etc

just to thrw a spanner in the works,i was talking to my son about this topic as i said i would wear anything as long as the money was right and he said"the problem he would have with wearing something out of the ordnary(unless it's a fancy dress party of course) is that the way he is dressed is part of the overall package he is offering,so if he is dressed inappropiately then that will be picked up on by other guest's and each one of them is a potiential customer.
so he's response is ,yes if it is appropiate for the party and will add to the occasion other wise no,because it could damage his business and reputation in the long term
