Pre-wiring Query

Hello All!

I've just ordered my Ultimax Trusslite & uprights (Thanks very much to Adam F for his help!) and am going to pre-wire it over the next couple of weeks. My lighting includes: 4 Acme Dynamos, 2 Magic Gobos & a Nebula laser. Providing it'll fit and doesn't look awful, I'll use all of it for the bigger gigs.

I'm going to make 2 cable looms. One for the big setup and one for the small setup. Here's my question though... Instead of wiring all 4 Dynamos up together, i was thinking of just master/slaving them in pairs, so it means i can just have one pair on for the some of the evening instead of hitting them with 4 scanners at once.

Anyone else done this? Think it's a good idea?

and plug them into 2 channels on my switch panel, so 1 switch turns on 2 scanners and the other switch. turns on the other 2.

I'll be using the CA-8s on the Dynamos, so i was wondering whether it'd be better to be able to control 2 sets of 2 scanners independantly or all 4 together?

A DMX Controller would be a good option, but switching a couple off would be fine. They're not too ambient anyway, really for the main part of the Disco.

An IEC Block may be a better option than wiring 'Cable looms', as it cuts out the box required where the wiring centre is housed.

Hey Ollie you can make them work in pairs but as you said at the same time it looks odd, however there is a way to wire it so it doesnt.
It requires making one pair the first in line (the lights you put on as a pair first) and the second wired next in line. When you turn on one pair they work together but when you turn on the second pair as well they work with the first 2 so you get 4 working together. However this will mean one of the pairs gets used more than the other but a roattion arrangment long term would fix this.

If you get stuck on the wiring ill p.m you the circuit diagram.

Have you considered investing in a DMX controller? Then you could programme them with different Dmx addresses and control independently or together.

Yes, but it'd take ages to program enough shows so the light show didn't become boring.

You're right they do take time to programme, however I cheat. I use a Martin Freekie and currently use it in 'edit' mode so I can programme on the fly. Slow big sweeps early evening, colour changes, gobo changes then get the lights dancing around as the night kicks in.

I use it with a pair of Gemini moving heads, a pair of Martin Scx 500's and a Kam cluster laser.

Does edit mode make programming any quicker, or are the scenes on the Freekie, Pre Programmed?

It doesn't make things quicker, just that you can adjust what the lights do with the sliders. It's as if you are setting up a show but you don't actually save it.

I can have them doing a slow gentle sweep with say a pink coloured star gobo, then I can simply change to another type of gobo, with a change of colour and have the scanners flying all over the room by moving three sliders a tad.
