Surprise parties....like them or not?

We have all gigged these but how would you feel if you are on the recieving end? Would you enjoy it or not?

I'm trying to arrange one but not sure how it will be taken......I think and hope it will be taken in the spirit it is meant ....but really unsure.

I would love every single minute of it. The look on someones face when they walk into the venue is priceless. Fantastic :)

I think people who "don't like fuss" will even secretly appreciate it, especially when they have had a bit to drink. I guess towards the end of the night, for everyone else there, it's just another excuse to go out, and the "surprise" element is forgotten.

Strange as it may seem, I am quite happy going to do discos and DJing at parties, but I am not a party person myself at all - I hate them.

For example, if some friends have a big party or something, I always make up to not go as I just can't stand it. I even turned down the offer of an 18th Birthday party, when I turned 18 in February.

I have done a few surprise birthdays and they have turned out to be good gigs but personally, I would hate it if it was for me.

Don't mind going to one, just don't want to recieve one.

In all fairness I'd love it but then again I dont think the surprise element would make an difference.

In an weird way I'd enjoy the surprise party more if I got to DJ.

Getting back on topic...I'm not keen on suprise parties, I think most people have an idea what's going to happen by the lame excuses they get given to get them to the venue......"lets's just pop into this social club/pub function room we never go to for a quick drink" :D

I WOULD appreciate it, I just wouldn't enjoy it as much as something I'd arranged myself.

For me, half the enjoyment of a party is the time spent arranging it & looking forward to it (just like with a holiday). However, if it's a surprise party, I'd be robbed of that enjoyment.

Rob that is a great and very interesting point. You can make the party more personal and suited around YOU when you have organized it, unless your very close to the person who may arrange a surprise one for you. Each to their own, it's like Marmite, but in surprise parties :p

I did a surprise party for my step-daughters 21st recently and it went down a storm (Peter can vouch for that). It was really hard to arrange everything and make sure she wasn't around when talking about it - I ALMOST slipped up once but managed to back pedal.

I would love one for my 40th in 2 years time, surprise or not. Peter, you may be getting a phone call for a cheap (free) disco around 1st May 2011 :p ;) :D

I DJ'd at a surprise 30th last Thursday and a Surprise 60th the weekend before. The girl at the 30th was definitely surprised, but the guy at the 60th had a surprise 40th, 50th and 60th so I think he had a pretty good idea his wife was setting him up again... He even had a speech prepared!! At the 30th I looked up near the end to find the birthday girl to wish her happy birthday again and found that she'd left sometime during the evening, so I don't know if she enjoyed it or not (I got the impression that a lot of her "friends" had just used her birthday as an excuse to party and she actually wasn't all that in to it).

My wife wants a "surprise" 30th next year, but I don't know how much of a surprise it's going to be, since she's been going on about it for over a year - personally I just think she doesn't want to have to bother with organising it herself.

I'm not sure if I would like a surprise party - I think I'd be worried about my friends getting it badly wrong... but it really is the thought that counts, so I think I'd be flattered regardless.

After all, nobody knows what you like & how you like things better than yourself!

Someone recently posted something on the forum about a cancelled disco booking for a surprise party due to the partner finding out & not wanting it to go ahead.

Therefore, If anyone IS thinking of arranging a surprise party, I'd urge them to consider whether it really IS the best thing for the person concerned, or whether they might just find something ELSE more enjoyable...something which they know about in advance and therefore CAN look forward to.

One of the best surprise gigs I was involved in was my 25th wedding anniversary. My wife thought we were going for a low key meal at a small eaterie. We told her we had to call in at a pub we don't frequent, where my siste -in -law works, to allow her to say hello. We walked into the function room, and there were friends and family. My wife had no idea, and we all had a superb night. Thirty of forty folk in a small room, great atmosphere.

I’ve had a surprise party once before and really enjoyed it, strange how folk will take it different or see it differently but I can see things from both sides.

I know what the MD likes from that way on so I think I’m pretty safe with what to do with regarding food, entertainment and the like.

All I’ve got to do is get the place and location right.
