Getting stopped by the police

This is another question I thought of following on from the Post gig thread.

Who has been pulled over by the police in the early hours of the morning and asked what you are doing with a load of gear in the vehicle ?

This has happened to me 3 or 4 times over the years. When I have explained what I do, it has lead to the "Routine" breath test then I have been sent on my way.

Has this happened to others or have the police just got it in for me ?

never once being stopped by the police in my van since DJing, but i used to get stopped in my car all the time! Always a rountine check

Because I work for peugeot as a new car salesman hence i get a nice car to drive!

then the usual checks!!!

Sometimes a cop car pulls up as you're loading the van round the back of a venue at 1am just in case you're emptying the place :cool:

I tend to wind down the window and hand them a card. 9 times out of 10 (yes, it really does happen that often) I'll just get a smile and a wave on. Very occasionally they'll want to see in the back or do the old tyres, lights routine.

Problem is there are only a handful of main roads on the island, and if you want to go anywhere reasonably quickly you need to use them. But so does plod.

I haven't been stopped for a long while, the last time was when my trailer lights stopped working, I had to follow them to the police station and wait until it was light.

TBH i wouldn't mind getting pulled over occaisionally at least you know then if my trailer and car go walkies there is the remote possibility that they'd get em....

Back in the 60s and 70s all the time because the Police were high profile.

Nowadays they are almost non existent--I should know-- I travel extensively to many different parts of England regularly coming home at 1,2,3, or 4 in the morning. Nothing :eek:

We did get stopped outside Newbury not long ago--my Wife, the dog and a small equipment set up in the car.

They said we cant smell alcohol on your breath so no problem--they then noticed our dog:D

You dont want to smell his breath we said with a big smile:p

Problem is the police here are "run" from Hampshire, so the only 'static' coppers tend to be your specials and a small core of local plods based out of Newport. A lot of them tend to be sent over for 'tours of duty' as it were, especially during festivals and events and over the summer when we have lots of tourists. So the chances of seeing the same faces regularly are quite slim. Add to this the fact that that my roadie and I have this running joke "3 taxis and a cop car" to represent the total traffic we generally see on the way home from a typical gig.

Ive been stopped many times. one time i remember it was a young copper being nosey . he was interested in the speakers :)

I once got my ugly mug in the front of the local rag for getting stopped in my perfectly legal transit van.....in the early 90's Travelling from a nightclub in the centre of Glasgow to my home in Largs at the time..............................
Oh i forgot to mention.................they stopped me 13 times that night.:eek:

I rarely get stopped at all now, but i used to get stopped all the time (Pretty much weekly). I'm sure a lot of it is down to the vehicle you drive... my last couple of cars were a 300zx twin turbo and a celiga gt4, I now have a mk3 mondeo... ;-)

Na, I get stopped for other reasons which do not require a van. LOL.

They will stop you if they have reason too and it could be anything like

1. Condition of your van
2. Area you are driving though with high crime rates
3. Driving style (not saying you are bad driver)

Ask the next time you get stopped why they stopped you.

Did a gig in Dumfries a few years ago and before the gig we were taking some lovely pictures of the area.Next thing we were surrounded by 4 rather large chaps who were accusing us of taking pics of their van:eek: Turns out that quite a few vans had been stolen in that area and they were just a bit curious as to why we were taking pics.

I have never been stopped by the police in my van but I say please stop me at will.At the end of the day if somebody was off with your gear you would hope that a routine police check would do the trick

I got pulled over once but it was mainly due to have loads of kit in my corsa driving up a steep hill which when you got to the top was the junction to a busy road. They were perfectly nice about it did a few rountine checks and sent me on my way.

Na, I get stopped for other reasons which do not require a van. LOL.

They will stop you if they have reason too and it could be anything like

Ask the next time you get stopped why they stopped you.

Its normally about 4 in the morning when I have been stopped before, just routine checks and to ask why I am driving a van round at that time on a Sunday morning.

I got stopped last year by a brand new 08 plate BMW. It followed me for a couple of miles before then some flashing blue lights in the front grill came on. Thats the last sort of vehicle I would have thought was an unmarked police car :eek:
