Anyone done these?

We're about to embark on an X Factor style competition over a few weeks, but can't decide on a good and fair way of voting? Any ideas?

I think a phone vote is a little ambitious, and also wide open to abuse ;)

An independent 'panel' of judges, say 3 - 5 each awarding points out of 20. (Leaves more leeway than just 10)
Highest total score wins ?. A bit 'strictly' but a pretty fair way I think. :)

An independent panel of judges is a must, the worst competition I witnessed is where the winner was best mates with the judges and the clear winner came 4th!

I run a "pub idol" style competition in my regular karaoke pub, we had 3 judges and the competition was ran over 2 months. Each judge gave marks out of ten, for stage presence, singing, and over all performance. So they got a total score out of 30 for thier performance, 2 people a week went through, there were 12 that went through to the semi the week before the final, then six to the fianl, then on the final the 6 left sung then down to 3 and the final 3 a bit later, then the winner!
