I've just come off the phone to a friend, who told me a pretty amazing story, so I thought I'd share it here. He does quite a few 2 hour kids parties, for which he charges about £125.
Following one such party, he had a phone call from one of the kid's mums to say she is having a 2 hour party in the double garage at home for her son's 11th birthday party, and wanted a disco. She asked if he could visit her just to get some ideas about the best place to put the disco & have a chat about things.
My friend said he doesn't usually make pre-site visits (which I can fully understand when it's only a £125 gig), but she said she'd really like him to visit & take a look, and also said she'd pay for his time, so he agreed to go.
He visited her this morning, and saw the garage. During their chat, he was telling her about the sort of lighting he uses, and she said she wanted it to look really good, and could he help. He explained that he could get any lighting she wanted, depending on what her budget was.
Bearing in mind that this is a two hour kids party in a garage, her response was "Well...can you make it look nice for £1,000?"

My friend tried to keep a straight face, and said yes, explaining that for that budget he could include a starcloth to cover up the garage shelves, moving heads, lasers and smoke (most of which he already happens to have).
She was very pleased with this, booked him on the spot and thanked him for visiting. She then said she would give him something for his petrol, and asked "Is this enough?" while handing him a £50 note! I need to mention that this house was only about 20 minutes drive from where my friend lives & he was only there for about half an hour!
The upshot is that he has secured a 2 hour kids party with a few extra lights for £1,050...and it was only a couple of days ago he was phoning me to say that both speakers blew up at his gig on Saturday.
