Is following a playlist and not using the mic entertaining?

Thoughts please.

Don't really know...
Be able to read the party I guess.

Is following a playlist and not using the mic entertaining?

What....

I'm one for not using the mic if it's a packed dance floor....I'll throw the odd comment in - if I feel it needs it......but if the dance floor's empty i'll use the mic, try and get them to do something.

Playlist's - i've slighty gone off now, the last few gigs i've used the little bit of knowledge I have gained. :)

Is following a playlist and not using the mic entertaining?

Of course it is.

As far as I know, people book mobile discos to play music.

They often give you list of music to play, so if you play that music, why wouldn't they be entertained?

You can't just play music.....i've done it and found it to be completly boring.
You have no reaction with the party and leaves you feeling flat IMO.

If that's how I feel - How does the customer feel?

There's a bit more to it than that!

What makes me an entertainer?

In a nutshell I'd say it's playing music to get people dancing, throwing in witty or amusing comments on the microphone when I feel it's appropriate, and encouraging people to sing along with or do the actions to certain songs.

I think that's pretty much it.

You can't just play music

I'm not sure about that.

Of course It's less entertaining than if someone is also giving it a bit of chat, but still entertaining IMO.

If you make a short car journey & hear three songs on the radio (all of which you like), but no DJ announcements, is that not still entertaining to some extent?

I think it is.

Surely the question is only relevant to those describing themselves as XYZ Entertainment :p :)

My personal feeling is that what makes an entertainer is the ability and expertise to judge individual situations and adapt accordingly to ensure that clients & their guests enjoy the experience

It's that old favourite 'quality'....defined as meeting requirements, no matter how low or bizarre the expectation

All schools of thought on this will be valid ,but the true entertainer will be the one with the versatility to know and do exactly what the circumstances demand. It might be anywhere from simple 'button pressing' to full interactivity.

In my own experience most occasions will require a skilled blend across the entire spectrum to add variety to a performance.

Sorry don't agree with this.
If you are in the car with the radio on....you only have yourself to be entertained....so if you have passengers are you entertained then? I don't think so, not by the music - maybe by the company.

Like wise if I go down the pub and the duke box is going......am I entertained then....no don't think so...but a pub is the same kind of thing as a party.
You have people and drinks......do the people in the pub feel entertained?

I don't think so.

An entertainer is obviously someone who provides entertainment, and I just found this definition of entertainment: "Something that amuses, pleases, or diverts, especially a performance or show."

Therefore, if you don't speak but simply play music which pleases people, you are an entertainer & they are entertained.

As someone previously stated, there is no right or wrong answer to this question, and all schools of thought will be valid.

At the end of the day, it's just a matter of opinion.

In MY opinion, an entertainer or DJ (same thing really), should be able to read a crowd and use the microphone as a tool to help him or her get through the night.

Playlists? Yes, I welcome them however big or small they are but there is a reason why. If someone is organising a themed night or maybe even a wedding and they ask their guests for requests in advance then I like it because I'm giving those people the personal touch by playing what THEY want to hear. An example was a while back when I did a 40th 80's themed party and there were 4 people who asked for The Redskins - 'Keep on Keeping on'. I played it for them and they were over the moon which resulted in me getting another 2 seperate bookings, both for 40th birthdays again.

I'm not keen on playlists that are pages and pages long but if that's what my customer wants (and it's working), then that's what they get. Of course, they could get a jukebox to do it or put an I-Pod on but I'm getting paid to do it because I guess they want some vocal interraction too.

Regarding microphone work, well I am not one for stating the obvious...I won't get on the mic when the dancefloor is packed with people grooving away to 'Dancing Queen' and tell them it's "Abba, Dancing Queen" when they already know! I will use it to make announcements etc and dedications and IF it is the right kind of crowd and atmosphere then I will chuck in a bit of humour if I can.

I class myself as a professional DJ and haven't really thought of myself as an entertainer until now as I guess that by using the microphone to it's maximum, I am?

I'm sure I've said it before but here goes anyway...

I will use a playlist but if it isn't working then i will stray away from it, generally even the playlist generator will forget what songs they've put down.

I will also use the mic to inject a more personal touch but not over the top like some DJ's, obviously at weddings the announcements need to be made IMO.

If the dancefloor is rammed then generally I will keep quiet unless a particular incident catches my eye and I feel it's appropriate to comment.

What makes me an entertainer? Well I've always received positive comments and I will dance to the 'action' songs. I've even been known to get on the floor and teach the actions before. :D

I think stood (or sat) there pressing buttons or shoving CD's on one after the other is not very entertaining (IMO)

I do think you can entertain without the need for a mic and following a playlist/trict music format. It's all relevant though, and depends on the type of event it is, the clients wishes, and the type of crowd you are playing to. I've done club-night gigs and youth events were the specification was mixed club music all night and no chat....and had amazing nights with great response on the dance-floor. The punters went home entertained.

It's different for most mobile events though (in my experience). Most events work better when you build a rapport with the clients and guests, which help everyone get involved and have fun.

The question, in my opinion, was answered reasonably accurately by Kernow in one of his earlier posts.
But here's my 2p, every gig is unique, you play different tunes at different parts of the night and use the mic/interact as you feel necessary. As you gain more experience you become more comfortable in your line of work, for some it is second nature, for others it is a bit more difficult.

How???

I answered what I thought makes an entertainer, the last time I looked I was in the mobile disco directory forum so I wasn't about to comment on comedians, clowns or singers etc.
My reply was based on the wide range of gigs you can encounter and a good entertainer will adapt to those surroundings, some can manage it quite quickly others may take a bit more time.

Ah I see...

I would class myself as an entertainer because I play music (generalised) through a system designed for such use, I can also interact with a wide range of audiences from young children through to senior citizens. I also provide karaoke and I am quite comfortable singing and encouraging people to have a go while not being critical.

Just one paragraph thrown together quite quickly but I think it depicts myself.

What makes me an entertainer?

I get a big buzz from entertaining people through music. That's not another word for "I let the music do the talking".

Seeing people dancing and having a good time does it for me. :)

Yes I admit, I am no all that confident on the mic, but I do use it and I'm now starting to use it more as part of my show.

Why would I call myself an entertainer?

I would call myself an entertainer because I choose to entertain people with music. Not comedy, or even driving a very fast car.

This is very much a thread for opinions, and I'm undecided myself as to whether I'd consider myself an 'entertainer'. I do use the microphone to enhance the mood of the night, so that might go some way towards it. However, fundamentally I doubt I could class myself as an 'entertainer'.

Pressing buttons on a D2?This opens up another possible aspect of entertainment - DJing skills. If you are a technically advanced DJ, you can entertain listeners with creative mixing and techniques. Well, those that are aware of what you're doing, and appreciate it.

I think to be a GOOD entertainer you need to be ABLE to doing the following

Judge the crowd with music, use of the microphone and presentation.

Some gigs you will think cheesey music, loads of banter type chat on the microphone and to have the volume quite loud

Some gigs however you make feel jazz or a specific genre (cheese is quite general and im using it just to make a point) and that use of the mic should only be done for annoucing food, saying goodnight etc...

Its easy to say this, but doing it correctly is another.

Impression I get with Darren is he enjoys the microphone, he goes off into the crowds and interacts with them and that gives it a personal touch, everyone know who the dj. This requires confidence and like the man said charisma.

Not everyone is the same and if you dont have that natural charisma trying to force yourself to be one is alot worse than "letting the music do the talking".

Different clients want different things at the end of the day. As long as you try to be the BEST ENTERTAINER THAT YOU can be then thats all you can do.

In a word, Interaction. Longer answer, affability, friendliness, courteousness, wit, presentation, and not letting the music do the talking. :D :D

Personally, I bemoan the apparent demise of the Old School types. Perhaps it's because I consider myself to be one. Sensible, pertinent and appropriate use of the mic is essential. Verbal diarrhoea certainly isn't, however. :D

Anyone that Entertains, whether it's a Magician, Singer, Disc Jockey, or just stood there blowing up balloons for the children.

Entertaining is making people laugh, and keeping them company. Avoiding boredem basically.
