Favourite type of gig and why

As the title says what is your favourite type of gig to do and why?


Mine would be 18th's as I can relate to them more then most other types and I find my self more relaxed about the gig throughout.

I would have said 16th's but what I find is that they all seem to like 'R&B, Hip Hop, Rap' etc which is not my thing by a longshot whereas 18th's seem to change more into the Ministry of Sound scene, well thats just my thoughts.


So whats yours?

Looking back I would say 30th ,40th and 50th birthdays , in fact any event that has that sort of age group.
Reason being , that was my era as well , and I grew up with the music.

I like doing 70's and 80's nights, more than I do Indie/Alternative nights if I am honest. The reason being is that I think I know that genre really well and I really enjoy it too. I've noticed that this year I am doing a lot of 40th birthdays (4 already down and another 4 booked). As I am 41 myself, I can relate to the people.

Yeah, I would say Weddings, or 50ths/60ths.

In fact, any gig where I don't really have to play too much Lady Gaga and more Bill Haley and the Comets or Depeche Mode...or even better Lionel Richie :sj:

I feel more comfortable and relaxed as I know a fair bit of the music. When you know the music well, it's a lot easier to entertain and "go with the flow" if that makes sense. :)

Yeah thats makes sense :) You can read the crowd better with yours and theres tastes in the same music.

I comfortable with that , if it had of been R&B , hip hob etc , that's way out of my comfort zone.

Because I know what music to play, and have a lot of the music they enjoy :) They're usually respectable people (unlike the majority of 18th birthday parties when they've been drinking) and i get nice feedback from them :)

I often think he isn't on the same planet as us. No disrespect but where do you get it all from Max? You have been telling us you don't want to go on the road yet because you don't have the right equipment and necersarry tools for the job....yet you compare which kind of gigs you like to DJ at? :confused: :confused:

21sts and 50ths and certains types of weddings.

21sts where the guests are well-behaved (and I have done a lot of those, believe it or not), and they like a lot of modern stuff, but have started to enjoy a lot of retro, too, so you can play a really lively mix, and if the numbers run to 100 or more then you can play just about anything.

50ths because they really know how to dance, and they do, they love their 60s, 70s and 80s, and they are generally well-behaved and grateful that a "young" DJ is playing "proper music" that they can dance to.

I like the weddings where the guests are actually there to party/celebrate - most often when the guests are predominantly of an age with the bride and groom (see 21sts) or where the guests are mainly older and the B&G and those few other younger guests really like their retro (see 50ths).

Bizarrely, I actually prefer the 16-21yr age bracket as I seem to relate more to them musically than I do to the older crowds. It's bizarre because I'm 31 this year, so ought to be able to easily relate - I'm starting to think that at 30 most people think they're too young not to like current music, but actually too old to know what that is - I get sick of having conversations like "Customer:Can you play some R&B? Me:Anything in particular? Customer:No, just R&B" and "Customer:Can you play some newer music? (this recently was while playing 80's/90's which almost everyone was up dancing too), Me:How about Bon Jovi? Customer: Nah, that's a bit too modern - got anything older?" I mean :Censored: ? Anyone know what "R&B" actually means at a 30th, because I don't (and I don't think the Customers do either!)

I also really like weddings where they're up for it, and where the bride/groom have given me an accurate portrayal of their musical tastes (as I've done a few where I've been given playlists which have been REALLY off the mark and I've had to make it up on the fly).

18ths. I have found recent 18ths have had so much more energy. I guess, you could include gigs for that age group (College balls etc)...but yeah, generally find them the most lively.

Weddings closely folowed by Proms & 18th birthdays.

*I love DJing at weddings, Dorset and Somerset have some cracking wedding venues and most of the weddings I do are at plush Hotels, Marquees, Manor houses, Castles, Funky Bistos etc. so that in it'self makes the experience more enjoyable.
I also find that guests at a wedding have usually had a great day with good food, free drink and are generally in a good mood. In my experience this frame of mind is spot-on for enjoying the party, which is all an evening reception is at the end of the day.....once the formalities are out of the way it should be a full on party IMO! :)

*Proms and 18th's are great, the energy at these events is awesome, I love the euphoric reaction you get when dropping certain tunes, it's as close as I get to my 'Free party' days......love playing the bass heavy stuff and being able to use my 'Big Boy System'.......:D
