Sitting or standing?

Inspired by a number of pictures over the last few months, and some recent experiences with other discos.

Anyway, do you sit or stand when working?

Personally i stand as i feel it looks unprofessional to sit whilst on the job (just my own opinion before im killed :) )

I always stand for the main part of the disco.

However, I sit down while the background music is playing.

I've voted for stand, as thats what I'm doing most of the time.

I think it has been done before as well too.

However, I usually stand at a gig but I always try and get a chair behind so I can sit down if I need to, as I have 2 fused vertebrae in my lower spine (all thanks to my D of E Award!)

HA HA, it got quite heated when I suggested that it looked unprofessional to sit down whilst DJing....I remember Dave(Dragonfly) got particularly upset that I would think him unprofessional if I was to see him sat behind the decks.

This time I'm going to simply vote and say I STAND......:)

I think you should stand during main part of your gig, However when background music at a wedding, Or a band is playing then have a seat, But I always try and get it behing the gear so im out of sight, But can keep an eye on the floor for my cue, I think if you sat down all night then it wouldnt possibly look good, But each to there own

If its a dinner dance i hide behind my decks on a chair , no one wants someone staring at them during dinner. All other times i stand.
Allowances being for when not feeling well, sa 3 weeks ago had bad food poisoning and still had to gig 6 hours after being discharged from hospital. Not a great night in terms of how I was feeling but no one seemed to notice. So voted for stand up as it is my usual position.

Stand up. No questions about it and while Im open to other peoples views this is something I feel is clear cut. Sitting down looks unprofessional. If its a sit down dinner I'll accept sitting down, if its a pre mixed cd then I wouldnt sit near my disco but somewhere I can keep an eye on things as I dont think people looking at a dj sat down looking bored is a good image.

We are happy for our DJs to sit during background music, for example during a meal - indeed in a smaller, more intimate environment, the DJ is less imposing sitting down during the background music.

However, sitting down during the main part of a disco is a complete "no no" in my book. Would you expect a lead vocalist to sit down during his/her set?

And as has been pointed out, this discussion was done in depth not so many months ago.

I just sit down reading the paper while the laptop is on auto play doing all the work :laughup:

Yeah, definitely was an extensive thread about this, but i suppose it would be hard to search for it, as 'sit' and 'stand' are very common words!

The only reason to sit that I can think of, is where you do not have a choice, due to injury or a disability.

I sit on a bar stool at our residency, but stand (back allowing) at most others.(I've added an option to the poll to cover this eventuality)

Any gigs I sit at, it's usually on a high stool, so from the front there's not an awful lot of difference (to the casual observer)

I'll sit from the start, during background music, or during a buffet/speech etc, otherwise it's standing, possibly resting for the odd few moments if my back is aching. I always stand when I speak or if a customer approaches.

I think the simple rule of thumb is follow what the customers are doing - not litterally though:eek:

It is OK to sit and be more laid back when the punters aren't directly participating in your performance i.e. during background music and buffets when they are arriving and chatting, finding a table etc and of course eating. Anytime there is dancing (or supposed to be dancing;)) then stand.

That's worked for me and other DJ friends for many years now:)

EDIT: of course generally stand up to make an announcement - you won't find the Wedding MC sitting down to announce the arrival of guests or the begining of the speaches etc:eek:

I disagree. If an upright or grand piano were designed for the pianist to be standing up, the keyboard would either be higher by default or be adjustable. An electronic keyboard player, playing standing up, will adjust the height of his board/s to suit his posture.

A DJ will typically place his/her decks at the optimum height to work them, to avoid limping home with backache after reaching down to play CDs for 5 hours. The height of placement from the ground may be influenced by the height of the individual and whether he/she plans to stand or sit whilst working (and what suitable hardware he/she has to position the equipment safely and sturdily). It would take a fool to place the decks & mixer so ridiculously low (or high) thus making the job uncomfortable!

Thats the proplem I have had with "all in one" sets ups using a flight case. The display was angled at such a way that I had to lean down abit to be able to read the display (very important as Im a digital dj). Did an three hour gig on a boat (hence why i had to use an all in one rather than my denons) and my back was killing me at the end!

Im not saying what you do is wrong, just interested as thats how I feel.
