A client has sent me some requests, but the file attachment is XLSX, and my computer won't open it as it says something about not having the file associated with it.

I was wondering whether anyone here has a computer which DOES open & read XLSX files...in which case could I forward the attachment to someone, get them to open it, copy & paste it into a word document & then email it back to me.

...or wouldn't that work?

Thanks in advance for any help with this, as I don't want to go back to the client if I can avoid it.

Get the converter that allows you to open them in an older version of office. As you will be possibly getting them more and more soon. Let me go and have a look for it.

Found It:

Thanks for the offer, but I think something more permanent is called for, in case I get more files of this type.

Thanks very much Callum.

I'm now updated (you're right, the download was quite cheap!) and can now open the XLSX file containing the requests.

The other file to watch out for is .docx - a recent MS Word file extension.

We found .docx and .xlsx file extensions started cropping up sometime last year. We ask the sender to re-save as .doc, .xls or .pdf as they cannot be opened in Office 2000

Have you tried these files in open office.org ?

I haven't yet come across a file that open office wont open.

No Larry, however I have just googled it and you have to download and install a program first. We can't do that as we're on dumb terminals and the ability to download anything other than PDFs is restricted at the terminal server.

For those who can't / don't want to download more Microshaft crudware, there's always http://www.zamzar.com/

Hopefully my update will work with that one too.

Funnily enough, I found that site & tried it Vectis, but for some reason it didn't work.

I think I'm better off with the new update anyway, as everything will just open automatically...just like my XLSX attachment of music requests now does.

Rob

As it's an MS Office 2007 program, you can download the free 60-day MS Office 2007 trial. This will allow you to open the files and, if you're happy, you buy the package at the end of the trial and unlock the full version.

Here's the link:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101741481033.aspx (http://http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101741481033.aspx)

Scroll down the page until you get to the "Free Trial Download" section and click on "Download Now". It's take a while to download and install but it's not bad software although it may take a little getting used to.

OK, it's confession time.

When I clicked the above link, the instructions said before you download the converter, you should download all essential updates, so I followed the instructions to do this before getting the file converter.

Unfortunately, one of these updates was Internet Explorer 8

What a complete pile of :Rob James:

Needless to say, I went back to IE7 within an hour.

That's one mistake I won't be making again!

 Didn't expect it to require IE8. At least you have a converter. :p Its a horrible way of doing things like that to get people to use your web browser. Also you should been able to tell it not to install it.

And boy were you right!

Not being very technical, I just followed the instructions in the link Callum gave me, and they instructed you to install all essential updates before downloading the file converter, and one of these was IE8.

Obviously I wasn't aware the converter would still work with IE7 & didn't know that it wasn't necessary to get IE8...or I wouldn't have got it in the first place!

Oh well...we live & learn!

I'd love to know if anyone has IE8 & is actually happy with it!

Just found this online, which sums it all up really:

70% of Internet Exporer users are using IE7,
20% are using IE6 and
10% are using IE8.

It works out at one a day! IE combined with RM (Research Machines (terrible network software)) and 400 pupils! The most common fault is Viruses and other malicious codes getting installed on the terminals which is a common fault in IE6.
