Making A Dancefloor

I might be going off on one again here! but bare with me :)

did a small function last night where a portable dancefloor was used about 15-20ft square.

it was professional but simple - alternating black & white tiles.

just wondered if anyone has ever tried or thought of building/making one of these?

look quite simple to build and have easy locking mechanisms.

also do you think there would be a market for hiring them?

the size is easy to expand on - just make more squares.

and what materials would you use?

i see theyre selling for £thousands - i reckon they could be made cheaply.

Have a look at your insurance first I gather? I think the solid wood ones are used more than the black and white ones and personally I dont like the black and white ones at all! I have noticed with alot of the wooden ones is they have some small chips in the floor and more than one suppiler Ive used has just put the black and green hazard tape over it :O

You need to really have florlok, which is the industruy standard. i would say if you make your own yopu are opening yourself up to problems with insurance.

That's certainly true in MY experience, so I'm just wondering about the size of the market for the black & white ones.

I can only think of a handful of times I've come across the black & white ones, and it's always been in marquees.

Virtually every portable dance floor I've seen has been the traditional wood block type with the silver trim around the edges.

black and white ones are quite a bit more money to hire usually, thats probably why you see wooden ones mostly in venues. And black and white floors dont always match the room, only marquees

The market is massive for dance floors generally. Black and white are very popular as are pure white, pure black and black with leds, if you have a few quid. ;)

I wouldn't say 'quite a bit more money'. Agreed they are more expensive but not a lot more.

On the topic of dancefloors, I would check your insurance, As there was one last night which was black and white, And like an ice rink !, A few claims are going in today to the owner

i like the look of the polished black with the LEDs in them as a sort of sparkling light, any idea what material that would be?

Im fairly sure they are acrylic :)
