1 or 2 active subs?

evening all,

i have a pair of 400w each WAudio actives cabs.

i have now been offered some big gigs and i'm looking at active (and only active) sub or subs to compliment them if required.

would you recommend 1 sub? or 2 smaller subs that i could even maybe use with top hats to connect the top speakers. if so which ones would you recommend?

also funds are tight and the tops are full range and give off a lot of bass anyway so i dont need big thumping cabs or expensive ones.

The beauty of active subs is that you can add them in multiples of one, rather than Two as in passives. I'd suggest you try one first, unless you get a big discount for the pair, then you can add a second if and only if you feel you need it.
Apparently quite a few folk own two active subs, but only use the second one once in a blue moon.

From what i've heard, the DBSub15 is very good, i'm looking to buy one when i have the cash. The problem for me is space, so I could only get a single one!

Edit: I'm using a pair of Wharfedale EVP-X 15PB at the moment for a couple of gigs and they're around 400w each. They're not that big, but they're bloomin' heavy. I think that you can get them for approx £300 each?

I swear by the RCF 705 active sub. As has been said, get one and try it out. If you need a second then go for it 9unless you get the both offered at a great price.

I prefer 2 subs, purely for aesthetic reasons. I like a nice symmetrical look.

Have I ever told you how fantastic mackie subs are? :D :D Coincidently I'll be selling a complete mackie package soon. Lol.

I use two just for that reason......it's a bit of a ball ache doing two trips but worth it IMO.

I use Calsbro 600 Gammas. Nice sound but not to in your face but the odd song does make them rumble...:D ..but then just turn them down a bit. :o

i will second that the gamma is a nice sub i was thinking about another of looking at the fortissimo sub

It is up to you really, dependant on what power and cone size you get, will determine how loud/bassy it will be.

Shaun's right though - If you only have one, the problem is, where to put it.

If using one, make sure it's high power and a decent driver.

I always think 2 is a good idea if you don't carry backup. Should one fail, you can usually run on the other (just the one).

Actually, before Tony A1 gets here, it's not true. The efficiency of the driver and the design of the cab will determine how loud/bassy it is, not the power and the size. As for failure, technically you could simply run your tops full range, which you do now, so not a terrible thing either.
