Ultimax Trusslite Query

Hello!

Just a quick question. I'd really like to be able to have my trusslite a bit higher, because when people are on the dancefloor, the magic gobos are blocked from shining any further back. However, on the vertical poles there are only 3 holes to be able to set the height, and even on the highest setting, it's still not that high.

So, would it be safe to drill a 4th hole closer to the bottom of the pole to give approx another 4/5 inches of height?

If not, is there any other alternatives?

Ultimax do a G-clamp with a top bolt, so you might be able to mount your magic gobos above the bar rather than below. I wouldn't recommend this for heavy effects though.

If you do drill the hole I might give it a go myself, it hadn't crossed my mind to be honest, but a extra few inches always helps (ooh er), as I have the same problem with the EFX500s and I'm looking for a way to get them higher (they have a very strange mounting plate)

I'd be very careful doing this as the pole will have to be inserted a certain amount to be safe, it's usually a minimum of about 3-4 inches.

Is there much pole after the 3rd hole?

Actually, having looked at the poles again a minute ago, it's probably not safe enough :( I wonder if Ultimax make longer poles or not...

First solution that springs to mind - do you have the two-piece uprights or the single-piece uprights?

If you have the two-piece (as is most common) then you could try getting an extra set of the 'poles with the holes'. Set the first one right down at ground level, so no 'bolt through the hole' - just the tightener - and insert a second set of 'poles with the holes' before adding the third top pole.

Not sure how tall (or steady) this might be but perhaps worth measuring and giving a try?


Or.... do you have the wheels on the base? This adds about 4". Might help ;)

I've got the single poles, after being told by a couple of companies that they didn't think it'd be safe enough to use the split-poles as it'd be too un-steady. No, i don't have the wheels, however - sounds like a good idea ;)

I wonder if there's anyone local you could "borrow" a set of the split pole bottom sections from just to try the theory - I just had a quick measure out in the shed and by adding a set of half-length 'poles with the holes' but setting them at ground level for stability, you gain about a foot in height.

Oh, and be wary of the wheels. They lift EVERYTHING by 4". Took me ages to get used to the new height all the playout gear was at :)

My mate has the split ones, so i'll get in touch with him about it.

An extra 4" wouldn't be that bad actually. I'm 6ft tall, so it feels like everything it pretty low anyway :p

Ollie, I have literally just rang Ultimax about the mountings for my EFX500, following up on email. Nice friendly people I have dealt with them before for a couple of things. I have found them very reasonable on price when you want something special too.

The fella who answers the technical questions re: safe working loads and heights etc is on holiday until 2nd July, which is why my question hadn't been answered immediately, but when he comes back he should be able to help you out. The answer might just be that they make you some longer poles if the safety aspect is ok.

Yep well said.... There is generally a reason why there isn't a "lower" hole... Ultimax will have made it to be 100% safe and not taken any risks. If they could have made another hole to make it higher they really would have.

No the split poles are perfectly safe and used not only on ultimax deckstands but other brands of deckstand too... Again companies wouldn't release a popular product and continue to sell it IF it wasn't 100% safe.

HTFR stated to either yourself or someone calling on your behalf the single lengths are more sturdy, as there is no join.

Too many people bought the split poles, then were coming back to buy single lengths. From that about 2 years we removed the split ones form our site, and only gave an option on single lengths. I had to re-catalogue it just for you Ollie, as you stated you wanted the split bars.

I didn't mean un-safe in the sense of it falling over and killing someone, I meant it in the sense of not being as sturdy as the single poles.

I told the woman on the phone that the split poles would still be fine, however due to the additional waiting time, as it was an urgent order - the single poles were ordered and delivered next day (Thanks Adam :))

Anyway - putting that aside, i'm very happy with the product & HTFRs customer service; i wish it went higher!

Normally you'd of been contacted straight away to swap the item if it weren't in stock, or look at alternatives, but they'd of seen who placed the order (IE me), and also that I'd add the item specifically for your order, so they won't mess with it, as they know, I know what I'm doing (well supposed to :D )

Its only then when it became urgent, they spoke to me, to see what we could do.
