On Sky news and BBC news.

He was rushed into hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest and they didn't revive him.

Still awaiting proper confirmation though, so still not sure.

Would be a great great loss if it's true.

Someone came up to me at my quiz & told me, saying she'd seen it on the TV in the pub. To be honest, I didn't believe her at first.

Then someone else came up, also told me Michael Jackson had died and said I should mention it & announce a 1 minute silence.

I chose not to, as the quiz is meant to be an enjoyable & light hearted affair, and an announcement would have soon put an end to that.

Having come home & read this thread, I'm so pleased I kept quiet, as it appears that when I was given the news (Just over an hour ago), nothing had been confirmed. It only seems to have been confirmed in the last 15 minutes or so.

If anything tragic hapens nowadays there is also someone sick enough to make a joke out of it and its probably passed through social networking sites and then people sending the same jokes in their text messages to friends and family. Before long the jokes will be ancient and people will be making jokes about someone else.

Must we??? & was he really that good?

I can only think of 6 or 7 tracks that I'd bother playing at a function & 3 of them are with his brothers.

Don't get me wrong, there was a talent there, but he's done bugger all worthwhile since Bad. How long ago was that?

I can't believe how over the top people are going with this, sure he had his moments, but he sure as hell wasn't in the same league talent wise as Presley, Bolan, Morrison, or Hendrix (& many other true legends now no longer with us ((those were just the first 4 that came to mind))

Couldn't agree more - although see the bit I've highlighted. MJ was a fab artist, yes, but IMO it was the work Quincy Jones did - arrangements and production - which propelled MJ into mega-superstardom. All the killer tracks are QJ productions, IMO.

Just like Sinatra's career had floundered until he started working with Nelson Riddle.... or Madonna had lost her way until she worked with William Orbit. The success of pop music is the synergy or all these artists together.

The tragedy is the way MJ's personal life had declined as well as his career.

As I said in my earlier posts...as Mobile DJs you've probably earnt money playing his songs or songs inspired by him, more than any other artist.

So from a DJs point of view, I can completely see why there are posters, me included, who are saddened by this news.

Michael Jackson made some great dance tunes and like most DJ's I use them, but recently he hasn't produced anything, so his death doesn't affect me, I'll still play the tracks I would have played.

But Presley, Bolan, Morrison or Hendrix didn't have the best selling album of all time.

Also, how quickly did more than a million tickets sell out for his O2 gigs? Not bad, considering his first hits were almost 40 years ago.

The internet suffered a number of slowdowns as people the world over rushed to verify accounts of Michael Jackson's death.
Search giant Google confirmed to the BBC that when the news first broke it feared it was under attack.

Millions of people who Googled the star's name were greeted with an error page rather than a list of results.

The BBC news website reported that traffic to the site at 0400 BST was 48% higher than average.

Google was not the only company overwhelmed by the public's clamour for information.
The microblogging service Twitter crashed with the sheer volume of people using the service.

He was a great entertainer and millions will mourn his passing.

We wasn't just this though. He was a father (if you can excuse the "dangling kids out of the window" episode), an eccentric (who wouldn't be under the pressure of that fame?). But what stands out for me was that he was a very shrewd businessman. After all, he bought the entire Beatles back catalogue which was a brilliant business deal. And he orchestrated a lot of his own publicity (such as the "Jacko In An Air-Bubble" thing). He may have seemed wacky at the time but it kept him in the public eye and, as the saying goes, all publicity is good publicity.

He was obviously a troubled man so may he now rest in peace.

The man was a musical legend and he will be missed by many but let's not forget he had a dark side which may or may not have been substantiated.

All the jokes Ive been sent have been in very poor taste. I even noticed people posting jokes on facebook even before it was confirmed.

People who think we are going ott about michael jackson dying and saying its been years since he released anything good, yet look at how many of his tracks have stood the test of time, ask how many of todays active artists have grown up and been inspired by his music. I for one will be playing a good few number of his tracks tonight.

You also have to remember that alot of the icons that died have died before many of us were born or could remember. I cant compared it to the others but the only other time I felt so sad about a persons death was oddly not Princess Di (though still sad) but a football player called Marc Viven Foe who suffered a heart attack on the pitch.

I reckon Mike#76, it wasn't fame that treated him badly, I fairly much think it

Darren#87, a very valid and perhaps overlooked point. Let's hope they are allowed to have as normal an upbringing as possible under the circumstances.

Let's not forget that, as a child he was 'forced' into stardom, while the other kids his age were out playing and experiencing a normal life. He didn't have a childhood, and that has been something he has been looking for throughout his entire adult life. I believe that explains his baffling lifestyle - building theme parks, buying ludricously expensive (and useless) items just because he liked them - exactly what a child would do if not guided and restricted by a guardian.

He was thrust into an adult world without all of the experiences and lessons we all had as part of growing up - considering that, it's not hard to see why he got the weird/wacko tag.

It is so tragic, and that's why it has saddened me so much - as he was my idol when I was a kid.

What have they got to do with it? In his own warped quirky way he has guaranteed their anonymity & it's not as if they'll ever be in the situation of wanting for anything unlike many other orphans of not famous parents.

People just seem to go over the top these days about people they don't even know, look at Jade bloody Goody for an example. I can understand grief for family, friends & even work colleagues, but for a total stranger that you haven't even met???? It's bloody ridiculous!

The bulk of his fame / hits have relied on either his brothers &/or Quincy Jones. How many of his own hits did he write?? I know Elvis didn't write his own stuff (before anyone jumps on my previous comment) but he was in another league completely. The man was born with more charisma than anyone before or since. Jackson was mediocre to good at best & would've been nothing without the undue pressure from his father & the talent & cooperation of his brothers & Jones.

I ended up playing Dirty Diana & ABC, as well as the Bates - Billie Jean, Fall Out Boy - Beat it, Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal, David Ruffin - I want you back & Bobby Day - Rockin' Robin.

Elvis was indeed in a completely differrent league to Michael Jackson, as he did NOT manage to have the best selling album of all time!

They were both great singers, but I know who was the better dancer!

Also, how old was Elvis when he began his career?

I can understand grief for family, friends & even work colleagues, but for a total stranger that you haven't even met???? It's bloody ridiculous! He's not a stranger to me, I know I've never met him but I've still seen countless interviews and videos - and not to mention that I've listened to his music far more than any other artist.

The bulk of his fame / hits have relied on either his brothers &/or Quincy Jones. How many of his own hits did he write??As for Quincy Jones - there's no doubt that Michael wouldn't have achieved what he did without him, but he still would have been successful without him. Rod Temperton did a lot of writing for Michael too, amongst others. NeYo was writing tracks for his next album too.

How do you know exactly how much input Michael had in the songwriting and recording process anyway? You don't - you've just read from Wikipedia or somewhere. He was involved, certainly with the lyrics, but you can't say exactly how much.

I know Elvis didn't write his own stuff (before anyone jumps on my previous comment) but he was in another league completely. The man was born with more charisma than anyone before or since.I think you're overstating that a tad - there's no doubt Elvis was a unique talent, but wouldn't you say that his performances are fairly easily imitated by tribute acts?? No-one can do what Michael Jackson did on stage - no-one.

Jackson was mediocre to good at best & would've been nothing without the undue pressure from his father & the talent & cooperation of his brothers & Jones. That is a ridiculous statement.

I have no emotion either way with the news of MJ's death. I feel sorry for his family and children as they will be going through a really horrible time right now, but personally the news hasn't put me up nor down.

I can fully appreciate why the death of him has had such an impact on so many people. To millions he'd provided the soundtrack to their childhood, so obviously the death will sadden and shock many.

Just because you dont like michael jackson you think its wrong for people to be shocked and upset at someone who was in a league of their entertainment wise. He hasnt released anything for years yet look at how many tickets he sold out at his gigs at the O2. His dances were amazing and still copied by many street dancing teams to this dance. How the hell can you compare him to Jade Goody!

I doubt very much you will find anyone saying that he was a normal person. I for one dont but he didnt have a normal life particularly childhood which may or may not explain his behaviour in adulthood. That I cant comment on really because I didnt know the guy but he'll be remembered for the music and rightly so.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists= Why so many people are upset/disappointed/gutted/affected/bothered by this news. The reaction to Jade Goodys death was a media - led Max Clifford ruled lesson in the art of making an otherwise, sadly, fairly common story of a woman who died of cancer and happened to have been on telly into a 2 month, headline grabbing crass "production"

In the case of Michael Jackson, its the passing of a man who sold more records that The Rolling Stones, Abba, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Elton John and Queen.

I'd say the public reaction has been perfectly justifiable.

I know for a fact that Quincy Jones didn't initially like the intro to Billie Jean, Michael insited upon it. Michael recorded a lot of full demos, lyrics AND instrumentation before Quincy ever laid ears on it.

:bang:
See above.

I find the whole reaction thing laughable & I have borderline pity for those that have gotten so upset about it. Not for their loss (because it isn't their loss, it's his family & friends loss, not complete strangers that he wouldn't have known from Adam) but for their sad pathetic lives, that they have to idolise people like MJ, Jade or Di.

For the record, nowhere did I say that I didn't like his music. Billie Jean is probably one of the greatest pop singles of all time & I've always had a soft spot for I want you back & Rockin' Robin. Certainly some of my gigs would've been poorer if it weren't for Blame it on the boogie & Don't stop til you get enough. The trouble is that for every one of them (3 of which were recorded with his brothers) there's an Earthsong, One day in your life or a Ben. Hardly consistent when you think of it.

Anyway, he's not dead. I saw him on the telly Friday night, on stage playing guitar with Lady GaGa at Glasto http://www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/2009/artists/ladygaga/ (watch the vid, you'll see him).

I'd be more upset if somebody like Suggs, Lemmy, Angry Anderson, Mick Jagger, Vincent Furnier or Brian Setzer died, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it, as I didn't know any of them personally (even though I've met 4 of them).

I just find it sad that there are people actively criticizing Michael Jackson, his music, and his fans in the wake of his death. What makes it worse is that they aren't logical, reasoned criticisms - they are personal, and quite frankly, nasty attacks. I can't really understand why, either

I do agree that the 'hysteria' is over the top from some quarters, but the dignified thing to do is to ignore it, and let it pass - look the other way.

Personally, I am saddened by his death - I had a ticket for one of the January dates and was really looking forward to it, more than I have for any other event in my life. Maybe it's hard to understand for someone who isn't a fan, but I grew up with his music - he was my idol. Some of my early memories were standing up on the stage at a school disco with all my friends (we were all the same), dancing to his songs, trying to copy his dance moves, and then hassling the DJ to play more of his songs.

So I'm sorry if it offends anyone, but as Michael and his music have had such a huge influence on me from an early age, it does feel almost like a personal loss.

Define successful? I'd say Madonna, & Garth Brooks have been more successful in the last 30 (certainly 20) years.
As have many other acts. In my humble opinion, Michael's best years were behind him, and his output and workload recently had been low. Contrast that with the first one off the top of my head, Edwin Starr, who never stopped working until his untimely death.
While from something Theo said a long while age I'm not sure he would agree wholeheartedly with me, I was deeply upset by the death of Kirsty Maccoll years ago, more so than Mr Jackson. It is of course a personal view, so each person's take on this will differ.

I walked downstairs, another member of the family was watching the news, and the banner was there that stated he had died.

I was quite surprised, but not majorly shocked.

It's unusual how it just 'happened' though (haven't read other posts yet)
but heard it was due to taking high amounts of a prescribed drug.

It is a Great Loss though

 there's a surprise :p ;) :D
