New subs DB Tech

As an avid user of the DB -sub15 for several years now. I Decided that I wanted a bit more scope for different setups. I play a wide variety of venue's with the maximum being usually around the 400 - 500 mark but these are pretty scarce the bulk being 200 people.
I usually take a mix of the following with me depending on setup
2 Mackie c300z with the db sub
2 mackie c300z with 2 peavey st-15s as support
2 tapco thumps with the sub-15
2 thumps by themselves and various variations using these speakers.

I decided to expand a little and buy another sub. The mackies are great and never top out when mixed with a sub 15 so it has been my most used sound system for the last 2 years.
I like the sound of the sub - 15 and its weight is a great bonus but in some of the rooms I have been playing in while they need no more volume they do need a better spread of the sound.
I usually use the sub 15 to one side of my decks stand and then the 2 mackies either side of me as satalite speakers. But I noticed that when I setup at certain angles the bass on one side of the rig is muted if the decks stand is between the sub and the listner.

This is only noticable when I have tables either side of me in line with my decks stand or slightly behind.

But I thought another sub- 15 would be ideal to balance it out but was unsure if it would fit in the car so decided to buy 2 of the db-sub 12's instead, Weighing in at 19 kilos each I thought it would be a great way to give a better spread without the extra weight. Also as I have speaker poles as well it would cut down carrying stands to every gig. And I would also still have my sub-15 for when I need that extra punch.

Does anyone use the sub- 12 or similar? I would be interested in how you find it in different situations like amount of guests, problems with ,or any tips on setup. Or if you use another 12" sub please let me knwo I would love to ave some ideas on what to expect.

Matthew, the db technologies sub 12 peak spl is 6db less than the sub15, so using 2 No. sub 12s how you've described (i.e. with no acoustic coupling benefit), the net result will give you 3db less spl of omnidirectional frequencies than when you use a single sub15.

Perhaps 2 subs are more aesthetically pleasing than one, other than that I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve.

If you coupled the 12s you may gain a further 3db benefit, but that would still only give you the same spl as a single sub15.

Peak is not a problem as even now I do not run my Sub-15 hard and have never run it into clipping. The real problem I am addressing is the loss of low frequencies on the side opposite the where my sub sits. It means some of the rooms I play in do not get a good balanced sound from every part of the room.
I realise as well the sub- 12s are less spl overall but sometimes I think the overall power is less appealing than the quaility of sound. I figure for the larger events Ican use the 2 sub-12s with the sub-15 and other times can use the single sub-15 or the twin sub-12's depending on benefits at the time ( room shape , upstairs, room in vehicle etc.)

Matt, I didnt think you were too impressed with the 12inch version?

No I hadnt heard the 12" yet I wanted a symetrical view from the front for certain venues where the bass does not disperse correctly. Really happy with my sub-15 but I cant get 2 of them in the car so had to find alteranative.

Nah love my one to much plus lots of room for the family. It takes my normal rig fine even my biggest rig squeezes in ok. But was trying to give myself a little more choice in both look and function.
+ I think the lopsided sub look is bugging me sometimes I think the 1 sub each side will look better and if I need more volume then add the sub15 for the huge gigs and possible another couple of tops.

Why dont you modify your deckstand so it fits underneath? no cost involved then.
