You have a £550 Budget, what would you buy? So far I've got it down to a choice of either 2 of these

I would go for the DB Sub 15.

The DB Sub 12 is only 127db max spl where as the DB Sub 15 is 133db max spl so will be more than twice as loud.

I understand its slightly over your budget but it will cut it better than a pair of DB Sub 12 which would only get 130db max spl.

Plus you will find the decks one has already been sold im afraid I bought it ast week they seem to have left it on their site. But to be honest the sub-15 is a very good sub and you can find them cheaper if you search around.

I am also looking at buying a single sub 15 as I am booked to do 4 outdoor discos during August and September. I used my Mackies outside last Monday and I seriously need a sub. In your opinion is a single DB Sub 15 powerful enough for outdoor use?

My wife will kill me if I try and buy two so that's not an option :(

Never used mine outside mate, I know Tom has, so maybe he can let you know their al fresco performance. I guess it would depend on how big the event is really. I can say I'm very happy with mine and it certainly packs a punch :) 1 has been plenty for me.

Max is probably working on the theory that driver size should be inversely proportional to frequency required. A correct theory undoubtedly, but difficult to achieve unless you intend to use the same rig every night. Some of us use 15" tops routinely, and don't fancy 18" subs. I wouldn't fancy using 8" or 10" tops on their own, though I know some excellent ones exist.

And some of us are hired professionally to play outdoors regularly on real bookings with subs and tops ;)

My set up with 1000 watt XR800f Powered Mixer plus Peavey Pro 15s plus Peavey 15inch Subs blows a few heads off outdoors and can often be heard in the next village to the ones I work in.;)

I wouldnt offer a serious Professional Service with anything much smaller or less speakers personally.

Im not saying you wont hear sound from smaller systems--it will just sound like a radio:eek:

Im not talking Glasto here--just a standard outdoor event for say up to 200 people.

Did one last Sunday--;) love the clear sound because there are no lousy acoustics to ruin the sound that you get in so many old Village Halls.:eek:

I reckon your 450V2's and 1 DB Tech Sub15 would sound great AND be ample. :) I've used the sub for gigs where it's not really necessary but the fuller/richer sound satisfies me more.

Why does everything have to be bigger and with subs etc etc. Efficiency dear boy. Go and listen to a Nexo system. I bet my 200W active EV speakers are a lot louder than the Peaveys you use. (Oops turned into a willy waver for a moment)

You'll have an input from your mixer and then probably a high pass out and full range out. I assume the sub has a active crossover which is used with the high pass out or if you prefer full range then go full range out.

Yup that's exactly what it looks like. Under what circumstances would you use the high pass?

It's a personal thing and the 'proper' way to run speakers.

Basically, the cross over splits the frequencies and nothing below a certain level will reach the tops, so effectively protecting the tops as virtually all the bass will stay in the sub.

If you need to push the rig a bit harder, then using the high pass out will afford more protection.

Personally, I still like the full range sound, but I have 15" tops which I suppose don't handle the mid-top frequencies as well as a 12 or even 10" speaker.

Go for high pass. I'd only recommend full range with 15" drivers, and then probably only with wooden cabs.
