Would you advertise in a bridal mag that had over 150 pages, plenty of editorial about other wedding services and nothing at all about our industry, apart from a one line mention in the 'entertainment' section?

Depending on price then Yes, I'd give it ago.

As long as its not too pricey what have you got to lose?

I doubt I'd advertise in any bridal publications. In the past I've advertised in a few bridal advertising suppliments in the 'local rags and associatated publications' a few times. It didn't generate a single enquiry.

Nothing to lose. I was thinking about the fact that we aren't mentioned, therefore not really being taken seriously as an industry and yet they want our money to advertise?

For me it would depend of the cost of the advert and the circulation numbers of the Bridal mag in question.

Tried it last year with "Brides" magazine it was a special feature on a cd rom of Wedding venues and entertainment.

Got nothing at all out of it and off the top of my head it cost about £400

I know Pete Soundtracker was on the same cd and think he got 1 booking out of it.

We have only ever advertised in a local wedding publication in the past, and that's only if we can have a good bit of editorial to accompany our advert.

Is it a local mag or national?

I got married last year and got moaned at no end, as I ignored all the boring stuff about dresses, favours etc etc and looked at the adverts in the back of the magazine. Very expensive to advertise and it was interesting looking at the number of advertisers that didn't renew their adverts over the period of time.

It's dissapointing that they are not taking Wedding Entertainment seriously. Ask a guest 6 months after the wedding what do they remember? They are most likely to say the party / entertainment....

If i were to take an advert in it, i'd want editorial to accompany it as well.:)

No-one appears to be on the same wavelength as me here...

Principles anyone?

I wouldn't advertise in any publication that didn't afford my line of work the same profile and editorial content given to other Wedding suppliers.

If they cannot be bothered to promote the benefits of a reliable Wedding DJ service then I cannot be bothered with them!

Much better to promote yourself at a Wedding Fair or similar.

Darren, have you thought about approaching them to provide some editorial from a DJ point of view. Even just a one-off article? As the owner of a forum (collection of DJs) you might just get an opening for discussion. It might go some way to righting that wrong.

Just a thought :-)

Very good point.

Isn't this forum all about moving the industry forward & improving its image?

I am understanding your view here--but I seem to recall some mag that was mentioned on here some time ago promoted Entertainment but it had a brides forum and one of the Disco advertisers was actually on it giving advice to Brides from an impartial point of view allegedly----

The resources of the Internet are so vast and add in Wedding Sites and really you have a serious problem finding enquiries unless as you say prominence and balance are given to an Entertainment Section.

My answer was no by the way--the returns I guess are likely to be somewhere between rubbish and very poor.;)

I would say spending money improving websites and rankings would be a better way of spending money---its not as if there arent thousands of DJs available for Weddings:)

I think brochure/ paper ads will go the same way as YP.

Did you know they are nearly bankrupt according to my paper.

The only positive I can remember is when a mag did a review on a Wedding gig by Corabar Steve and one of my Callers--- it got a very positive rating resulting in one further booking for Steve and myself---so that was good.

They even bought Steve and I a drink at the bar:D

Indeed.

Also, ITV have been forced to shed a load of jobs due to their reducing advertising income.

More and more advertising is moving towards the internet & away from all other areas, and that's because more & more sales are being made through the internet.

It's the future.....BIG TIME!

I've paid out for 2yrs worth of advertising (a tiny little advert mind) in a leaflet in a very local bridal shop, and as a result I've had 6 weddings book since it launched 4 weeks ago. It wasn't cheap, but has obviously paid off already. The benefit of this approach was that the leaflet was only a single sheet of A4 folded into a DL sized booklet with just a few advertisers (so I was the only DJ) and with a big space for the B&G to make any notes they needed to. I talked to the Bridal shop before advertising and they mentioned that what they will usually do is use the leaflets to note down anything they need for the B&G (dress sizes/gowns being considered/etc) and hand it to them to take home.

What I will say though, is that without exception, every one of them looked at my website first and then contacted me (through the website), despite the advert carrying my phone number and website address.

I still can't decide what age group I would cater for, but Wedding Customers are bound to see it and call the company as the entertainment is said to be last on the list.

Most Brides, as seen on television, buy about six different magazines just to flick through and go "Wow, I want that dress", so you'd have to get an advert out in each of them, in hope to receive a phone call.

The way I would do it, is to advertise in there for the time lengh of the advert (eg - 6 months) and see how it goes, if you get some business from it, calculate how much you have gained, if you get nothing, then don't bother using it again. Simple.
