If you are off there this summer, be aware of this new health hazzard, the tourist people won't tell you!! There's seems to be a new non-detectable variant of Dengue fever that is causing a lot of problems on Ko Samui and Ko Phangan at the moment, particularly in Chaweng. The conclusion was that the strains appear to be mutating and becoming difficult to detect and therefore treat. Unfortunately the problem seems to be getting worse, particularly with it being wet at the moment. A nurse at the Bangkok Samui Hospital said they have seen a big increase in Dengue-like cases over the last 6 weeks, but none are showing positive results in blood tests! Be very careful if you are heading there and use a strong mosquito repellent. You only need one bite from a female mossie and you could contract it.
