Help needed! Set list for 18th Birthday party

Hi Guys

I'm new to the forum (treat me gently) and new to being a mobile Dj.
I have done a few shows now with no problems as they have all been older crowds.
Now I've taken a booking for an 18th birthday party and would like a bit of advice from you seasoned pro's out there.

I thought I'd start the evening with some charty stuff from the last couple of years ( the bit when everyone is still arriving and having a chat) I know that the person likes Clubland type stuff and I have put a mix together of classic dance stuff, well stuff I would call classic "born slippy, opperation blade ect".

I'm going to slip in some ska,rock and motown because ther is bound to be a few oldies there. But my set is 5 hours so I am asking for a little bit of advice from you guys who have done plenty of these type gigs.

Is there somthing thats a MUST PLAY or can someone give me a few tunes and pointers of what else to play?

One of the things I do is to play what was Number 1 the day the person was born. Unfortunatly in this case it's Bryan Adams everything I do. Can you belive it's been 18 years since its massive run at number 1, Makes me feel old.

I always find that an 18th birthday is one of the eisiest functions to dj at
and i always find that you can still play alot of what i call "wedding party tunes". such as.... Time Warp, Superman, And quite alot of black lace stuff,
i always like see if i get a big conga line going. Even try a few fun party games like using toilet roll to dress people up as mummies, or dress a man in womans clothing, lol. it usually works for me.

It may be the first CD in your car glovebox, but try and avoid 80's stuff. I saw a Giglog of an 18th, where the DJ was playing 'Gimme some Lovin', and it's just too Cheesy.

During the pre-final part of the evening :

Final Part

For the Final Part : Dance, R&B, whatever people want basically.

I find that good communication with your client is the key to a successful night.Please dont just assume its all clubby,chart,r n b ect.Yes that playlist is popular with most but ask what your client would like played.

You might find that its also a family party with parents\aunties\uncles ect so you will also have to include a few songs for them.

You don't need to have spent the last 20 years coiling cables and driving vans, to know how to mix. I have mentioned this before.

If you have no experience and don't know how 18th parties run, then how can you possibly offer an opinion on how to DJ at one and know what to play. You haven't done one!!!! :bang:

If you started playing Agadoo at an 18th without anyone pre-requesting it, you'd get lynched. The chicken dance is an American song that people wouldn't know over here and 80s tunes go down well with almost every age group.

That is based on my knowledge and experience, not on what I am guessing at or what I have seen some idiot say on Youtube.

Ask for requests on the night,if you have a half decent music collection you'll do just fine, but basically as others have said, most gigs involve chart stuff,

I have been to 18th before, and know Exactly how they run.

There were approximately 100 attendees, all fairly decent people, not the sort that get drunk and start fights. The DJ played agadoo etc, and it went down ever so well.

You've been to one 18th and are offering advice based on that? Right....

Okay here is my opinion from a dj who is a mobile dj unlike a bedroom DJ!

I tend to start with things like this:

Blue - One Love
Hearsay - Pure and Simple
Bewitched - C'est La Vie
Hanson - Mmmbop


70's & 80's can go down well as long as it is well known songs

Also of course chart music as mentioned.

Cheese is a winner most of the time

Cha Cha Slide
Macarena
Saturday Night
Cotten Eyed Joe
5,6,7,8

Totally agree with not playing agadoo!

18th can be good functions. Just be aware as to not play songs that get them going crazy if they look like a "bad" crowd if you get my drift would be my advise.

I just want to say a great big thankyou to everyone who has repled to this thread.

I only posted this afternoon and it had to go through a moderator first I could not belive the amount of replies I have and please keep em coming.

I was a bit shocked by the agadoo inclusion and am now panicing as I don't actually have it in my collection and all jokes aside you can bet someone will ask for it.
I'm away to itunes to download it.

Once again thanks to everyone you will be definately hering from me again and I will post on this thread when I have done the gig and let everyone know how I got on.

I have done hundreds of 18th in the last few years and they all change with the times and what is en vougue.

I would definitely say i do not know how they work so someone without any experience is definitely not. You may wing it but you will not be any good. Trust me 18 year olds are very good at telling you your rubbish!!

Is as cheesy as i would go.

Classics like (but not too many):

wake me up
dont stop me now etc.
decent chart music from last few years.

such as:

- Low
- i love college
- bonkers
- boom boom pow
- up
- shontelle
- disturbia

You get the picture.

etc.

- also get some drum and bass just in case such as pendulum tarantula. You will get the you got any d&b mate (or blad) at the start but leave it till the end and mix it into some jungle (shy effex etc) and then to something like pijano to wind it down.

on site internet your best bet for downloads.

- i would say though that 18th do like the slow stuff too these days which has really thrown me (such as no air). They all have a slow dance like in the 60's at the end.

Very sound advice - talk to your client and find out what kind of Gig it'll be. I've done 18th's which have been Chart, Reggae, Ska & D&B with a 30min break (by request) for cheese (Love Shack, YMCA, etc), but I've also done 18th's which have been real alternative nights with rock, indie and finished off with requests for Adam and the Ants and Prodigy. I've also done family 18ths where the best tracks of the night have been Follow Da Leader and the usual party stuff like Oops up.

In short. Max - you have no clue how an 18th might work out. To be frank, I've no idea how an 18th might work out until I get there on the night, especially without talking to the client first.

But after a while, you end up switching off, so I wouldn't play ALL of it.

Sorry this reply is a wee bit late but I went on Holiday just after the gig.

First of all let me say thankyou to everyone who replyed to this thread.

The disco was a great success.

Here I was with all the latest dance tunes ready to play I had asked the lad who's birthday it was for any requests he wanted and he gave me a list, everything he had requested was in my collection so everything was looking good.

Now the disco was in Antrim in Northern ireland and for anyone who does not know this area lets just say, it's out in the sticks lots of farms and country folk.

The most requested songs were, Wait for it


Garth Brooks
Kenny Rodgers

And basicaly any country songs I had, and all theese kids were 17 - 19.

Not your usual 18th

Anyway I played all their country requests and they thought I was the best Dj ever and I got some more gigs out of it.

So once again thanks for all the replies.
